To be fair, any of the UI toolkits available for Java or C are absolutely abysmal and practically useless.  How people write good software with them is beyond me.

Amen. I took a OOP class where I had to write a 2D clock using Swing. It was terrible. :I

We could be huge fags here and install a 'mobile device' theme for the forums software (I'm sure there's at least a few)...but really, this place renders on a smartphone browser pretty well already so there's no point.

Aside from the obvious ripoff of iPhone UI cues, there is a Wordpress theme that is pretty awesome for mobile devices. Rendering right isn't a *huge* challenge anymore, it's a question of being able to comfortably read the site (not everyone wants to read Arial 10pt at 96dpi on a 4" screen) and not (easily) fat-finger stuff. *That* is where just about any non-mobile-themed site falls down on a mobile device.

I've been here on an Android device, it's okay but if there's really good SMF mobile themes then it could definitely be better. Not that I care; I don't make a habit of coming here on a mobile device.
Can it be this sad design
Could be the very same
A wooly man without a face
And a beast without a name

Hey lookie, it's been 10 (or more) days now since Dragoneer said he will remove said lazy staff (which he promised around the 8th or 9th) but they still are on the listing. If they're not gone by the time this so-called "maintenance" is done, you can say I won't believe another word from his mouth again.

Admin edit: First and only warning, don't use colored text for your entire post you insufferable faggot.

I'm still waiting for those winged badges they were going to roll out three months or so ago.

They rescheduled the downtime for early Sunday morning (Feb 20th) and then pushed it up until this morning. It is currently 5:25AM EST. "Early Morning" has passed for much of the world, and for the second day in a row the site has failed to go down on schedule.

They can't do anything on time.

Edit: For a fun fact, there is exactly one time zone where it's already 12:29AM Tuesday morning.

Not only that, but now that it's down, yak is saying the database restructuring/cleaning/whatever is going to take longer than expected.

Big shock there.

You guys should really be cleaning out your new submissions messagecenter.

Y'know, if these things were automatically pruned every few weeks.... Just think how many millions of these could be from accounts that haven't been active in years.

Please, that's like asking Dragoneer to actually let other coders volunteer.

It's been 4 hours and 5 minutes since that was posted. Can I take credit for having an alt account with 120,000 messages in my message center? Yes? Awesome.

EDIT: Well, it's back up, and it looks like not a single one of the inactive admins has been removed from their post. Not really surprised.

The staff list was trimmed, but the moochers were not those removed.

As much as I'd love to harp on FA, Kyoujin and Silver were 2 of the admins named as not pulling their weight. Simmer down a little.

If their DB schema wasn't total shit they probably wouldn't have 392 million rows in a single table - I imagine they have soft deletes for everything so their tables just keep getting bigger and bigger. I'm not even sure if I could believe that they performed updates on 392 million rows in 4 hours; hell, I wonder if you could expect a select to even return on that table. A full table scan of that table would probably crash FA....
