Just an update to say that that the new file server is a Proliant 2U case with (apparently) 12 1TB drives, 16GB RAM, and 4 cores. A single core machine would be more than sufficient to saturate their network bandwidth, and 1TB is more than all the furry porn created to date. With all that heat packed into a 2U it hopefully will come with a LED timer counting down until the early day it cooks itself to death. Further, they've bought a big flashy database server, again one big overkill expensive machine. Since their half-assed code crashes the database machine pretty often it'd make perfect sense to do what every other competent service does, and run two boxes in a dual-master configuration. Same situation with their application server, which is certainly going to be set up in the same no-tolerance configuration. Web code is designed to run on multiple parallel servers, we are really not limited to just one big expensive gamer toy. Don't trust sixteen thousand bucks to someone who doesn't know the fundamental difference between a Web site and TF2. Preyfar quite clearly doesn't have any idea what MTBF means.
In summary, the three servers they've bought would work much better if they were each two much cheaper servers. If they had even an experienced network tech designing this system it'd be four times as robust and twice as fast for half the price, no exaggeration.
