What if the pentagon has stored lost data of porn and yiff in it's data, has anyone over there saved about millions of porn data and art in it's computer drive? tell me more about the facts what they have in your opinions!

The forum thread is a wonderful collection of dumb shit. I'm surprised some of these people are capable of breathing without assistance.

Near as I can tell, the actual problem is this: Whoever bought the machines thought it'd be a great idea to put gamer-class nForce motherboards in server cases and then install FreeBSD. This is a problem because nobody outside of nVidia knows how to drive the ethernet device in anything other than "rape-the-cpu" mode. This could be fixed with a $100 Intel Gigabit card, except for this: They don't have another free slot unless they remove their RAID card.

Apparently with the $4000 they raised, they're buying some real server-class hardware from Dell. I'm not holding my breath.

Let's hope that, in addition to the hardware problems being fixed, they get someone to RECODE THE FUCKING SITE while they're at it.

The only thing professional that even comes close to rivalling FA for downtime and bugs is Steam, and frankly I doubt you could picth the idea of downloading furry smut content for a fee to furries...

Why not? Isn't that why the FA admins have left the donation button up long after they've met and far exceeded all of their donation goals and have enough money to buy some respectable server hardware?

They have in fact taken the donation button off of that page.

I fucking hate Dragoneer.  If he would spend more time maintaining the fucking website instead of commissioning and drawing porn of himself taking it up the ass from Random Huge-Cocked Scalie #209 this shit would not happen.

Dragoneer really doesn't solve many problems there. Like any classical geek-overlord, he feels that since he created it he should get kudos indefinitley without having to do anything else. From what I understand Damaratus and his team do most of the actual fixing of software issues.

Remember, the guy spent 9 months in nowhere just so he could get the money to buy a server and 'be somebody' online, then took the money from that just so he could 'be somebody' in the conscene. Each time he did little more than just pitch the idea to fantard underlings who slaved away to get things done. Dragoneer doesn't do a tenth of what Shy Matsi does for FA:U, but he still gets the kudos.

Power is an awfully strong motivator in nerd strategy... which is odd since they don't ever gain real power, just dominance over their D&D buddies.

Just an update to say that that the new file server is a Proliant 2U case with (apparently) 12 1TB drives, 16GB RAM, and 4 cores.  A single core machine would be more than sufficient to saturate their network bandwidth, and 1TB is more than all the furry porn created to date.  With all that heat packed into a 2U it hopefully will come with a LED timer counting down until the early day it cooks itself to death.  Further, they've bought a big flashy database server, again one big overkill expensive machine.  Since their half-assed code crashes the database machine pretty often it'd make perfect sense to do what every other competent service does, and run two boxes in a dual-master configuration.  Same situation with their application server, which is certainly going to be set up in the same no-tolerance configuration.  Web code is designed to run on multiple parallel servers, we are really not limited to just one big expensive gamer toy.  Don't trust sixteen thousand bucks to someone who doesn't know the fundamental difference between a Web site and TF2.  Preyfar quite clearly doesn't have any idea what MTBF means.

In summary, the three servers they've bought would work much better if they were each two much cheaper servers.  If they had even an experienced network tech designing this system it'd be four times as robust and twice as fast for half the price, no exaggeration.

Our new file server, Trogdor, has been ordered (thanks for the name, Samael!) Trogdor is a high end HP ProLiant quad-core Opteron utilizing AMD's latest technology. It packs a delicious 16GB of RAM (yes, you read that right) and a mere 12TB of hard drive space. Yeah, totally bad ass. In addition, we will also have 2 1TB drives on hand in the case anything should ever go wrong, we'll have spare parts available.

BURNINATING THE FILE SYSTEM! TROOOOGDOOOOOOR!

"Due to the warnings I have received over PMs which confirmed to be true, we may be canceling the order for the HP server in favor of less scalable but compatible Dell PowerEdge 2970. It seems that HP's server can only support HP made hard drives due to what they have called a "carrier", which probably is some kind of metal or plastic thing that all other drives don't have and that is not being sold separately. We can not afford to buy HP made drives because they are three times more expensive then they should have been."

lol. the gift that keeps on giving.

Yeah, all the comments about wasteful spending on such an unnecessarily beefy server? Pff, throw those away, those are just trolls trying to make a name for themselves. But now that we're aware of this silly incompatibility that would have come up if we had actually researched our hardware instead of simply blowing our wad on Shinies, we'll get something else!

I am constantly amazed at how much more human a bunch of people who pretend to be animals are than the people who have no idea this subculture exists.

Huh. I guess I'm just inexperienced in rackmount stuff, then, 'cause when I worked for a streaming company I don't remember our servers ever having this problem. Oh well.

Last I checked, drive sleds for all servers are overpriced, nonstandardized, and not sold separately?

Feel free to correct me, I'll admit to being wrong!

Mind you it was -our- servers, and the guy who was managing them was quite competent, so he probably figured out how to get around the problem. I'm not denying the fact or anything. I just assumed that those things were universal. Oh well!

Point kinda still stands with regards to the research part.

I don't think anyone's brought this up yet, but who suspects that with all this talk of the database and preserving it and ect, that they totally dropped the ball and all the porn and shitty music and stuff is toast?
