Weasyl Wankfest / Viv user loses his shit over Weasyl
« on: November 07, 2013, 08:28:22 pm »
So our own dear Conan, aka AndyRichter (and sometimes HEPennypacker) on the #Viv IRC channel, has a problem.

Quote
Nov 06 22:30:19 <AndyRichter|2>   so am I correct in assuming weasyl is run by a group of shadowy individuals

He has a problem...with Weasyl.

Quote
Nov 06 22:33:35 <AndyRichter|2>   things just seem to happen while other directors are apparently out of the loop
Nov 06 22:34:29 <AndyRichter|2>   weasyl's management structure is a mess
Nov 06 22:34:43 <AndyRichter|2>   not the people but just the way it's organized
Nov 06 22:35:28 <AndyRichter|2>   there's a heap of people floatijg above the rest
Nov 06 22:35:47 <AndyRichter|2>   if I laid it out on paper it would just look like a cock

He has a lot of problems with Weasyl

Quote
Nov 06 22:40:37 <AndyRichter|2>   well
Nov 06 22:41:08 <AndyRichter|2>   there's no leadership because there's no leader
Nov 06 22:41:32 <AndyRichter|2>   the leaders are all on the same level due to ben's pr shit
Nov 06 22:42:40 <AndyRichter|2>   I mean essentially there's a board of directors with no president or ceo
Nov 06 22:42:55 <AndyRichter|2>   so they just sit there and ????????
Nov 06 22:44:33 <AndyRichter|2>   there's directors who own the servers outright now, which is a horrible idea
Nov 06 22:45:27 <AndyRichter|2>   and I'm going to hazard a guess that just kind of happened with some nodding and shrugging
Nov 06 22:45:52 <AndyRichter|2>   because if they get pissed off we'd have jheryn v. arcturus 2

But what's his real/ problem with Weasyl?

Quote
Nov 06 22:46:48 <AndyRichter|2>   it's chepaer and more effective to just give me the site and i'll pay for it myself

Oh.  Or maybe it's this?

Quote
Nov 06 22:56:20 <AndyRichter|2>   from the outside the lights are on but nobody's home
Nov 06 22:57:02 <AndyRichter|2>   i wanted to get involved because I was tired of complaining about the rest of the art sites and wanted to actively help make a good one

Oh, well, he just wants to help, and he's not getting any feedback from the people in charge, is that it?

Quote
Nov 06 22:57:10 <Fiz>   example: instead of coming to me, or other staff, about your issues with castazel, you posted a bunch of shit on lulz (i know what your id is) about it and i think forum posts? like banging on pots and pans to get attention to the subject or something
Nov 06 22:57:29 <Fiz>   i mean you didnt even come to me when you wanted to be part of the site and instead you kept going through habnabit even though we're in the same chat, right here
Nov 06 22:57:59 <Fiz>   and everytime you didnt get a definite answer at the time when he asked -for you-, you went and moaned about the site somewhere (lulz or the forums)

Oh.  Surely that can't be all there is to it?

Quote
Nov 06 22:59:46 <AndyRichter|2>   when I finally did get into chat and I said what I wanted to do I got shrugs
Nov 06 23:00:37 <Fiz>   well i guess cry at habnabit then for not dropping what he was doing immediatly to get you cookies from the cookie jar

And then there was this which I'm dropping because fucking lol like it means anything

Quote
Nov 06 23:00:39 <AndyRichter|2>   in the same amount of time I got a job with an award winning creative services department

HOW'S THAT WORKIN' OUT FOR YOU BUDDY?

tl;dr: Conan is losing his shit in a slow plodding trainwreck on IRC and it's hilarious.

So this Ben guy, he's pretty much a moron doing more harm than good.  I don't even really care one way or the other about the whole ~battle of the porn sites~ but, christ, this guy is just sad.

I'm posting this shitty placeholder until we can browbeat Conan into contributing.

News Media / Unemployable furry ends own life - StalkingCat dead at 54
« on: November 12, 2012, 04:13:16 pm »
As reported in this post on Flayrah (a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Monolithic Antifurry Conspiracy and VivWorks LLC), renowned circus freak Dennis "Stalking Cat" Avner has shuffled off this mortal cosmetic-surgery-laiden coil.

Like Jim Groat without the guns, Avner was known for his bizarre looks, disturbing mannerisms, and making his living entirely on the furry con circuit and the charity of others.  He leaves behind no spouse, no children, and no kin of any sort (except otherkin amirite folks?), and his title of 'weirdest looking mofo on the planet' automatically passes on to that guy with the full-body jigsaw puzzle tattoos.

He will be forever remembered as "That cat guy from that show about people who look weird", and to 95% of furry fandom as "Who?"

Avner was 54.

Everybody loves Kickstarter and its ilk.

From self-aggrandizing projects by embarrassing Internet people to...self-aggrandizing projects by embarrassing Internet people, 'crowdfunding' is the hot new bandwagon everyone is jumping on.  As with any sort of popular thing, furries are no exception.

By way of example, perennial terrible artist and former CYD whipping boy 'Daveykins' Foxfire has set loose this abomination upon the world.  I can't really make any sense of what the hell the project is about; all I see is a poorly-drawn mouse character he claims is 'an homage' to the films of Don Bluth.  Also a pose where the character is holding a keyblade.  Oh and he needs $2,500 to, in part, 'find a server to house it in'.  Spoken like a true relic from 1996.

For those unaware, Kickstarter only gives out funds raised if a project meets its goal; hence why you'll only see the most deluded of would-be furry fundraising superstars there.  That should give you some small idea of just how out-of-touch with reality folks like ol' Daveykins are.

I figured it was high time we had ourselves a thread to chronicle some of these hilarious, disturbing, and (for those that actually get funded) depressing examples of furry panhandling.  Feel free to post links to Indiegogo, Offbeatr, or any other similar 'crowdfunding' sites.  Just do us all a favor and mark 'not work safe' as appropriate.

Site Updates / Server moved
« on: February 25, 2012, 10:03:43 pm »
Hey fags, I've moved the server to another VPS located somewhere deep within the Nevada desert.  We should still be accessible via both IPv4 and IPv6.

Anyone who decided to post any useless, annoying drivel between the time I dumped the DB and changed DNS welp too bad your shitty posts are lost to the aether, deal w/it, etc.

Site Updates / Yet another forum upgrade
« on: June 12, 2011, 11:33:32 pm »
Pretty much all the themes got destroyed by the upgrade for some reason or other, so everyone's been reset back to our default here.  Deal w/it until we decide to find some new alternate themes.

Edit: For those wanting a darker theme, try BlackBox.

Site Updates / Mobile theme
« on: May 22, 2011, 12:14:05 am »
Hey kiddies,

We've installed a theme specifically designed for smartphones and mobile devices.  You'll find it under 'smf4iphone' in the theme selection page.  I'm hacking on a plugin that will automatically display said theme if you visit the site on a mobile device but that may be a while.

FA Obsession Collection / FA loses another admin
« on: April 29, 2011, 01:28:00 pm »
Well since nobody else seems inclined to post about this, I will.  Somebody post some relevant links to FAF or something.

Dragoneer's ever-shrinking inner cabal of trusted furfags got just that much smaller (and significantly more bereft of common sense) recently as Witchiebunny (whose actual position within said group I am unclear of) publicly 'stepped down'.

Wait, didn't that happen before?  In some form of protest?

Anyway it's looking like this is more or less permanent, and probably not voluntary.

Site Updates / User account cleanup
« on: April 14, 2011, 12:45:57 am »
Did you register an account some time ago?  Have you never posted with it?  Have you failed to log in for greater than 30 days?

Welp, you're deleted.

All accounts with zero posts and an idle time of greater than 30 days have been removed.  If you got caught up in it, well, too bad, just re-reg.  Make at least one meaningful post and you won't be purged next time I get insomnia and decide to clean things out.

Other Topics / The 'whatever happened to...' thread
« on: February 18, 2011, 10:44:16 pm »
We have a pretty good record of people not dredging up long-dead threads out of the ether, and I'd like to keep it that way.  There's also a vast history of furries doing stupid (and entertaining) things beyond our meager archives, that perhaps some of you may be wondering about and/or have new information on.

So in an effort to continue discouraging thread necromancy, and encourage conversation that doesn't involve FA, here is a big fat catch-all thread for asking about or sharing new content concerning old stories.

I'll start:  Whatever happened with that guy who ran Confurence into the ground a few years back?  I remember there having been some gigantic drama surrounding the final con, something about him inviting in camera crews from some TV show or another in exchange for a wad of cash.  Did anyone actually even show up to it?  Did that guy try starting a new one?

Site Updates / Avs, Attachments, and SSL
« on: December 27, 2010, 11:43:18 am »
So apparently when I blew out the forums and reinstalled them a few months back, I forgot to copy over all the attachments and avatars.  Whoops.  That should be fixed now.

Also hey we've got SSL now isn't that just nifty as fuck.  I'll be implementing SSL shortly.

Edit: And there we go.  We still recommend using a different password for Viv than any other sites as well as changing your password regularly.

Site Updates / Outage 15/Dec/2010

Our hosting provider moved all their servers to a new datacenter tonight, hence the downtime.  I'm sure you were all so lost and alone without us.

Other Topics / Fun with Referrer Logs
« on: November 05, 2010, 01:04:39 am »
So back when we launched this site, I was tasked with writing a script to parse through our referrer logs on a regular basis, and make them accessible to the rest of the admin crew; partially to watch for trends in who was linking to us, what search terms led to what forum threads, and for the comedy generated by certain visitor IPs.  I recently overhauled this system quite a bit to make things a bit more useful, and while the tool is still restricted to admins only, I figured I'd make a little thread here and post some particularly interesting or humorous hits that come up.

One of my all time favorites, from quite a while ago, involved someone arriving on my article about DC Simpson.  While the search terms they used were amusing enough ("ozy and millie sex change"), it was the IP address, and the timing, that made it stick in my memory.  Around 9am local time, the first hit came in from an IP resolving back to a proxy.disney.com address in Disney's Burbank IP block; then 8 hours later, another hit with the same exact search term came in, from an IP on Charter's network in Glendale, CA, a city not particularly far from Burbank itself.  Furfag DCS fans within the big D?  Who knows.

Much more recently, and what really prompted me to create this thread to share the info, a hit came through that once again involved DCS.  Someone did a Goog search for "dc simpson shaving" and wound up in the DCS Megathread a few forums down.  Once again, the search terms themselves aren't necessarily that funny; it's the IP.  In this instance, a harmless-looking IP in the Comcast Business range, which just so happens to resolve back to "office.penny-arcade.com."  So much for Tycho not liking furries I guess?

Anyway, future posts won't be so damned wordy; they'll mostly be search terms or originating sites, landing pages, and most likely what the IP resolves back to since that's the most common reason to find these things humorous.  I encourage the other admin crew to post any good ones they find as well.

News Media / Vivisector 3 Year Circlejerk Bonanza
« on: October 26, 2010, 11:49:00 pm »
Three years ago today, 27-Oct-07, three former moderators of CYD thought it might be funny to split off and form their own website and forums.  A number of other CYDiots eventually jumped ship, and the IRC in-joke slowly turned into A Thing.

Today, Viv averages around 4000 unique visitors a month, with a quarter million individual 'hits' and a gig and a half of monthly traffic.  A lot of our 300+ threads have been shitty, and a lot of our 200+ members have, as well.  Conversely, we've had quite a few threads that managed to permeate Google's search database, putting our humble little forum at the top of the list for searches about pedophiles, dogfuckers, and dead (fuck you I'm a) dragons; and we've managed to become home to some excellent (despite being furfags) posters, willing to dig up and expose the ever-present hilarity and ineptitude that so permeates the fetish subculture we smugly look down upon.

So, let the circlejerk commence!  Do you have a favorite thread; a favorite frequent Viv punching bag; a favorite poster?  Have you seen Viv pop up in an unusual place or from an unexpected search?  Do you want to send us all your money ALL OF IT so we can buy more furry porn to plaster around the smelly basements of our parents' houses and jerk it to in an 'ironic' hypocritical way?

We're the only game in town, folks.

Big Damn Welcome Message / We're so fucking web2.0 it hurts

The Viv forums now have a twitter account.  If we feel like it, we'll post announcements and significant threads there.

Site Updates / Forum Upgrade
« on: August 22, 2010, 10:10:57 pm »
Since I'm drunk on a Sunday night, I've decided to upgrade the forum to the latest version of SMF.  This appears to have horribly broken our beloved ApolloBB theme, so I'm switching to the default forum theme while we find a replacement.

Edit 11pm PST: Oh hey we have some lovely new choices for you in your thematic pleasure.  "Flagrant_alt" is our new default, and 'Cleanliness' and 'DkTheme' are also quite nice.  You can preview all the available themes in the Account Settings section of your Profile.

Big Damn Welcome Message / Oh noes! My account was deleted!
« on: August 10, 2010, 01:33:49 am »
Due to an annoying influx of spammer types, we're knee-jerk deleting any accounts that so much as look suspicious.  If you're a new user and believe your account may have been deleted for this reason, please do the following:

1: Admit to yourself, the world, and any gods you may hold dear that you're an idiot for making an account that looks like a spammer.
2: Goto 1
3: Send an email to abuse -at- vivisector.org (that's me! gawrsh!) with the email address you're using to register with and your desired username.
4: If your email actually gets through and isn't flagged as spam by our k-rad spam filter, we'll reply with an all-clear to re-register and flag your account as legit when it reappears
5: Post your all-important little thoughts so we can all mock you mercilessly.

It's as simple as that.

Edit: You can follow these same steps if you've been banned as well.  You'll need to provide a pretty damned good reason why we should unban you, though.

SPECIAL NOTE: Accounts are ONLY deleted due to spamming or suspicion of being a spammer.  All other infractions or administrative whims will result in partial or full bans.

News Media / Furry netsex in the UK may be made illegal
« on: May 18, 2010, 09:24:24 am »
I really hope there's a Viv-esque website out there for making fun of the ridiculous of the UK because things like this are hilarious and disturbing at the same time.

Thread topic from this article on The Register.  The general gist of it involves the 'Obscene Publications Act', which outlaws the publication of CP, BDSM, and other 'extreme fetish' works; and whether IRC and/or other internet-based chat can be considered 'publication'.  How exactly private chats could ever even remotely be considered 'publication' simply by being on the Internet is beyond me, but then again, this is the UK.  At any rate, a hearing is set for early July to determine that question.

I have no idea if the OPA in its current form has been or could be applied to furry fetish works (any Brits on the board want to chime in here?), but given some of the other cases it's been thrown around in, it doesn't seem like much of a stretch of the imagination.

Of course the other fun bit in that article addresses one district judge's interpretation of the OPA in ruling that "whether or not a text or message is construed as threatening will depend not on the intent of the sender – but on how that message is viewed by its recipient."  Which pretty much makes Viv illegal in the UK as well.  Good times, good times.  Anyone have that emote of a crying bulldog in front of the English flag?

Article Discussion / Article Submission Guidelines
« on: May 16, 2010, 12:34:51 am »
So, you think you have a good idea for an article on the Viv Blog?  We're all sincerely doubtful, but if that's not going to discourage you, here are some rough guidelines before you go wasting all your time:

Your idea/article should be:
-Thorough
-Entertaining (this is entirely subjective and may be waived depending on content)
-Verifiable (to some degree)
-Informative
-Within the scope of Vivisector itself
-Of interest to the general Viv population
-Concise
-Grammatically correct and spell checked

If you manage to convince yourself that your idea meets most of these requirements, write up a brief synopsis explaining your idea, how you intend to expound upon it, and a general idea of length and content (ie, images and/or funky markup).  Email that synopsis to articles at vivisector.org, with 'article submission' or something similar in the subject, and indicate somewhere what your username on the forums is.  The Vivisector Cabal(tm) will laugh at you a lot behind your back and eventually one of us will send you a PM on the forums with a go-ahead, a don't-bother, or possibly asking for clarification.  If we give the go-ahead, it will probably be accompanied by additional information on what we'd like to see, suggestions on layout, or whatever.

Step two:  Writing and editing.  Write your article, send it in plain text to articles at vivisector.org, and we'll look it over.  It's very likely we'll ask for some things to be rewritten or language to be changed or whatnot - don't freak out, that's just how it goes.  Assuming you can stick it out to a final draft that is approved by the Viv admins, we'll ask you to mark it up in basic HTML with image tags, and send the whole shebang as a zip file to - you guessed it, articles at vivisector.org.  If the zip file winds up being more than a few megs, we'll arrange some other method of getting it to us.  At any rate, assuming everything looks good, we'll post it on the front page blog with your name on it (and if I'm not lazy, I'll fix up any buggy markup), and fame and fortune will be yours.  Write enough quality articles, and we may even give you your own account on the blog!  Wowee isn't that exciting?

Sarcasm aside, we are interested in new articles and new writers.  As such, if we reject your idea or scoff entirely at your article, we will make every effort to explain exactly why.  If your idea is straight up crap and non-salvageable, we'll tell you so.  If it just needs a little work, we'll try to point you in the right direction.  If your writing is just plain awful, we may ask you to rewrite large swaths of your submission.  If your markup and layout is lousy, it may delay the article being posted.  Regardless, we're willing to work with just about anyone who is willing to work with us.

This thread is for questions relating to article submissions.  Off-topic posts will be shitcanned.  As noted above, interest checks should be emailed, not posted here.

Article Discussion / The New Meat: Great CYDiot or Greatest CYDiot?
« on: April 05, 2010, 02:39:45 pm »
Now that a number of classic CYD articles by esteemed former colleague The New Meat have begun to appear on the Blog, we could use a place to discuss his many targets and boundless anger about webcomics.  We've tried to keep these articles as intact as possible; though some images originally hosted on Imagebucket have inevitably been lost.

Of the articles currently on Viv, I think the one which is simultaneously the funniest and the most horrific is the one on Kit 'n Kay Boodle.  When it was first posted back in 2005, I had only scant passing knowledge of the comic and its creator, and the collective dysfunctions therein.  And despite not really having any particularly odd fetishes, the comic manages to sink to depths of depravity that few others dare attempt.  And of course it gave us the oft-repeated cries of AAAUGH POODLEMOM.  Good times.

Some of the reviews could really use follow-ups, I think.  When they were written, Better Days hadn't even started the idiocy of the 'adult Fisk' story arc(s), and Gene Catlowe was just barely beginning his decent to complete and total lunacy (likely fueled by his connections to Katelis).

Feel free to discuss The New Meat's works in this thread; if you have any requests for older material that may not be available, let us know.
