It's not the same thing. Nothing really wrong or unusual happened in the Memphis news report, but the things that are at every convention were sensationalized. They picked out the weirdest looking fursuits, generalized facts about the culture, and emphasized the sexuality. "For some furries, that STUFF involves... SEX." That's the report's fault, with a little on the convention staff for not demanding more control. Though someone on the MFM group did mention: "For all of the fursuiters at the con this year, who did they go after? The guy in the leather studded fetish gear." I concede, maybe everyone should keep the leather gear off the hotel floor, but that wasn't the problem in the report.
This is different from stories and documentaries where the actual freaks come flying into the camera ready to show off their plushie collections and framed porn in the living room. I still say the worst thing they showed in this report was the station's sense of humor. And speaking of that, the YT mirror is down, "due to a copyright claim by WMC-TUS Action News 5".
