Scandal! / Re: 2gryphon's Child porn production busted! (Not really.)
« on: July 20, 2012, 07:50:10 am »
I really doubt the FBI was there on a bogus child-porn charge. That's more of the purview of local county governments eager to use their DHS-grant surplus military assault rifles. The FBI isn't going to misinterpret context like some six-tooth sheriff's deputy (the FBI would like to stick to entrapping Muslims and Occupy sympathizers with fake bomb plots, thank you very much).

So either the FBI was there, and it had nothing to do with child pornography, or they weren't, and it was another police agency. Or 2 is just making it all fucking up.

(fun story: once upon a time, a relative worked in a department of a major company whose scope included security. This company employed engineers locally, including one multi-decade employee who was of Iranian origin, but had come here either before the Revolution or in its immediate aftermath. A few years following 9/11, a few bona-fide FBI agents showed up at this local office wanting to talk to the guy. In their post-interview discussion with said relative, they pretty much told him that they had received a bullshit "tip" - they knew it was bullshit, probably a racist neighbor or something - this guy lived in a really nice part of town - but policy at the time dictated that they had to follow up, regardless of merit.)

If it did actually happen, the way it's told has too many unanswered questions and doesn't make sense, so it could be he's drumming it up for theatrical purposes, kind of like Mike Daisey and his Apple Factory story on NPR.

That's actually an appropriate analogy, considering pretty much everyone involved in that thing was a jackass. Not only did Daisey ruin a perfectly legitimate cause (the very real plight of Chinese workers) for his own stupid self-promotion, but he was aided and abetted by O.G. existential wanker Ira Glass, who subsequently used to the faux controversy to wail about "facts" and "storytelling", when his show is nothing but upper-middle class people telling us how deep and meaningful their lives are.

Oh, this is SO going on stage.

I wasn't aware that nonexistent FBI agents investigating you for suspicion of running a child porn studio (presumably beaming in children using the matter transporter in your wardrobe) constituted material for a stand-up comedy routine.

Well it's a good thing he doesn't have a comedy routine, am I right folks?

Scandal! / Re: Censorship or something - furries being furries

The dude's Russian. Granted, he was probably born after the disbanding of the USSR, but Russians tend towards paranoia when it comes to surveillance, and not without reason.

Yes, it looks excessive from our perspective. But to him, plus any language barrier that might exist, it isn't really.

Look for the FAleaks threads on this website. He was more or less outed as such when a private confession from one of his victims was leaked. He's always had a certain tendency towards that kind of personality - he's a short Asian dude but plays a massively built dingo online, has trouble being nice to women and is generally douchey and needlessly aggressive online and off. And Jesus, look at his art. It's always his big huge character (again, IRL he's short and small) raping some smaller character. The size difference can be so ridiculous that people began asking if the females were underage. They're not, but it's just that ridiculous.

I believe there were suspicions and rumors about this particular incident but no real confirmation until the note leak of December 2010. A private confession from the victim to Dragoneer - asking for help - was leaked. She had no reason to lie, since the note was never meant to be public, and her account matched what little was known about the incident. Then Dragoneer says he won't help a sexual assault victim because popufurs, but that is another topic.

When the leak happened - Adam reacted like he'd been caught. He blacked out his online accounts and sort-of went into Internet hiding. After a few months he was back, though, and being the asshole he always was. Fast forward to the aftermath of Anthrocon 2012, and someone else has been calling him out over Twitter and FA journals regarding another rape incident - allegedly three guys involved in this one. If there's any more concrete info about this incident, no one's posted it here.

News Media / Re: Another furry dies in auto accident

I think it'll be considered the best possible outcome for pretty much everyone if IK sticks to trolling Lulz and FA, and being irrelevant to anyone who has a life and/or things to do. Because the alternatives mostly involve IK ending up in a courtroom and/or mental health facility.

So Tony Ringtail mixed work and furry a little too freely, the FurBQ got a little too big to control everyone...and the inevitable happened. I like how there was all kinds of pushback online to the obvious and sensible reaction "This is why I don't tell people I'm furry", but you know what? Paychecks are better than some kind of Internet philosophy argument about how being furry and being gay are the same, and that you shouldn't hide it. (For what it's worth, volunteering information about yourself is kinda awkward behavior anyway. Do you tell everyone you meet that you happen to like Android phones or Macintosh computers?)

At any rate, don't ever get into a situation where you will be held responsible for the possible misbehavior of furries. Because you will regret it.

I would think that, following the last note leak, people wouldn't be willing to trust FA notes as a confidential communications system anymore... But then again, furries...

But why would they release a bunch of notes unless something interesting came up though.

Dude, have you seen any of these Anonymous leaks? They do it because they can. They live in some warped version of the "V for Vendetta" movie where dumping someone's entire hard drive onto the Pirate Bay is a noble act of valor and has no unintended consequences whatsoever.

So no, there doesn't have to be "something".

okay past that, i haven't heard anything about this other than a couple posts on a lulz thread. and arcturus isn't exactly the most reputable source to get information from. that might just be like, my opinion though.

I would tend to agree, except that you know what other recent events are repeating themselves from two years ago? Zaush probably raped someone at Anthrocon 2012 and it's blowing up in his face (again). The hackers stated last time (at least through third-party intermediaries), that Zaush's behavior (and Dragoneer's malicious inaction in dealing with it) was a big part of their motive.

Re: prison, it's only a matter of time before charges get pressed. He might not go to prison, but he will show up on the sex offender registry, at least! Given the right circumstance, someone will follow through and press charges. His chances of getting away with rape decrease each time this happens. It's just a shame that between now and whenever that happens, some of furry's biggest names will have been complicit in allowing a rapist to run wild in the fandom; every victim will have become a victim unnecessarily — but since the fandom leadership looked the other way, lives will be (and have been) ruined.

Oh you can get the intended meaning, if you don't think about it too much. I'm sure she didn't.

(Seriously, though, this is what you get with people who hear things, don't actually know what they are/what they mean, plus a hearty dose of meth and a couple of critical brain regions missing. She is trying to issue a "categorical denial", probably on the advice of this lawyer character. Which is, as pointed out above, very odd. Perhaps this Average American Mom didn't like the weird gay nerds at this FurBQ, and used her position on the school board town council to do something that crossed ethical/legal boundaries, and now that she realizes that the shit has hit the fan, she's retained a lawyer? Dunno! But it is very odd.)

How about instead of figuring who paid what and how much of a discount they got, let's point out that neither of these people should be spending a thousand dollars on what is at least the third fursuit between them. For the purposes of argument we'll set aside the fact that Sciggles was panhandling for wedding donations on Twitter before dropping cash on this thing.

Even though, you really don't get much grift-ier than that. Newt Gingrich would be proud, and probably a little bit envious he didn't have the GIANT BRASS BALLS that Sciggles obviously does.

You'd think he'd have the good sense to stfu instead of looking guilty as fuck, but I suppose rapists aren't known for their good judgment.

Even good/financially-successful restaraunts have trouble with that shit. You have to be an absolute Nazi about you and your employees following food-safety procedures, and the minute someone doesn't, even a little, any pathogens can spread to hundreds of people like, well, a virus.

The timing is unfortunate. Although, with bacon cookies (um, ew?), I think a little 48-hour food poisoning is the least of your concerns.

Yeah, funny thing how everything some people do is an effort to justify and rationalize the past.

So...we have the libertarian who thinks if he plays a bad teevee portrayal of Thomas Jefferson (as imagined by Glenn Beck), he gets to say whatever the fuck he wants. Okay.

(sidebar: when the temporal range of your acceptable Western philsophies stops in the 18th century, then you get an 18th century understanding of humanity. This is why you want to throttle every libertarian you meet and yell PEOPLE DON'T WORK THAT WAY. Because over the last 200 years, the rest of humanity has figured out that those guys were mostly (mostly!) wrong.)

And we have the all-but-dead-to-rights-rapist, who also thinks that pushback on sexual harassment claims is hunky-dory. Gotcha.

"Just kidding" is a great one, though. I'll bet he whines "ad hominem" (incorrectly, I might add) every damn chance he gets, but saying whatever and then walking it back with "KIDDING!" is fine!

Well, she recently splashed out on a fursuit (tho' she claims it was "cheap") for anthrocon and is claiming to have never begged for donations:

Well, she's learning from the pro. The six-tooth brigade of the Republican Party has Sarah and Todd Palin, and we furries have our own Grifter Queen and King, Susan Scoggins and Sean Piche.

re: the squad having a lawyer. In the northeastern United States it is very common for the structure of small-town emergency services to be such that a formerly loosely-structured volunteer squad has incorporated as some kind of legal entity (non-profit, or whatever, I don't know) and gets a periodic contract with the local government to provide services. It is very possible someone had an axe to grind with these people, and whatever happened (or didn't) is being used against them in an unrelated dispute.

Whatever state law New Jersey has regarding such arrangements probably addresses the issue of legal representation and/or dispute resolution.

It seems very plausible to me that this guy was not too quiet about the furry thing, and everyone kinda knew about it - knew enough to know they didn't want to know more, and tolerated it, until someone decided to use it in a personal attack to gain the upper hand in some sort of unrelated business or administrative squabble.

I don't know. I agree with quantityorama that someone is trying to distract from something. I'm not sure that anything outside of this specific situation is related (ie. sexual assaults at AC, which, by the way, is anyone really surprised there? Have fun spinnin' that story in the local press, Sam.), but it seems like there's no point in doing much of anything but waiting until something authoritative comes out (ie. town meeting minutes that address the issues). Because right now, all we have are FA journals from this guy. Which borders on worthless - ie. not even worth reading.

And assuming it did happen, what the fuck did they expect?  "Hey, let's invite a horde of furfags to a public event.  What could possibly go wrong?"

That's really a stupid thing to say.

Something happened. But until we get some external reportage on what it was, I'm just going to assume the cops got called to the NJ FurBQ for some unknown reason, and everyone's gone into CYA mode. Until the police report is released or local media picks this up, everyone is lying.
