FA being slowly DDoSed
« on: July 31, 2013, 04:22:27 pm »
Earlier this month, on July 7th as Anthrocon drew to a close, FA was DDoSed from nearly 180,000 hosts.

The site did not crash for hours like it has in DDoSes past (in fact, it worked fine, abeit slowly), and they were pretty quickly able to put a stop to most of the rogue connections. Key word there is "most", because ever since that weekend, FA has had an abnormal amount of guests on it.

within the past week, though, it seems the DDoS has started to slowly return.

It's worth noting FA is only slightly slower with double the traffic (and from what outsiders can tell, the same servers, the new ones aren't believed to be in service yet) despite past claims that a handful of "scrapers" can cause the site to grind to a halt.

About three hours ago FA toppled over and began whitescreening for all requests, while the forums started to flop between loading very slowly or throwing a 404 error instantly. Within the last hour, the crack tech team became aware of the issue but still haven't been able to say what the problem actually is.
