Thank You, Fur Affinity!
« on: February 23, 2012, 04:58:53 pm »
I just wanted to be the first to thank Fur Affinity and it's administrator Sciggles for working tirelessly to remove all traces of the abomination the kids are calling (According to the Schenectady Sheriff's Department "Parental Action Alert" flyer sent to High School parents) "Mary Jane", the "funny stuff", the "giggle weed", the "Indiana hay", the "Wacky Tobaccy", or more commonly known as "marajuana" from their web-site. I've been informed that not only are images being deleted, but users who make references "hinting the use of illegal substances" are banned for a whole week! Victory!

I can now rest easy at night knowing that my children will not accidentally stumble upon images depicting anthropomorphic animals or even people who might be "lighting up" or "smoking a bowl" of the "Laughing Grass" amongst the heaps and piles of images depicting rape, torture, bestiality, scat, used diapers, blood, two men having relations, ads for Bad Dragon, references to pedophilia, My Little Pony, alcohol use, murder, gore, castration, and everything else that isn't pleasing to our LORD and Savoir Jesus Christ.

As a mother, I appreciate that FurAffinity is trying to keep the site safe for young eyes. Implying underage drinking is one thing, but when it comes to drugs, those things are NO GOOD.

So thank you, FA. We at the Concerned Conservative Mothers Association have talked, and we will be sending you a Silver Bible Award for Protecting Young Minds from Artwork Depicting Harmful Smokeable Substances.
Sincerely Yours,

Lorraine Goodman

President
Concerned Conservative Mothers of Schenectady, New York.

Oh good heavens! I had no idea such filth was on that website. My Little Pony? A show for heathens! Thank you for alerting me to this matter, we shall be vigorously discussing it in our next church meeting.

The problem here is they've once again proven that the rules are a complete mess that you can hardly even expect them to enforce, let alone enforce them consistently.

The AUP does not cover things like this at all, and the ToS simply says
Quote
Don't post or discuss anything illegal. You and you alone are responsible for your actions, and take full responsibility for consequences of your actions.

which may or may not be the broadest rule on the entire site. Illegal where? The US? Europe? Texas? Casper, Wyoming?  Iran? Laws about drugs vary from state to state, so if, say you lived in a state that allowed medicinal marijuana, had it prescribed to you, and you uploaded a picture to FA (for whatever dumb reason), you're breaking no laws because it's not "illegal".

And if you're not allowed to "discuss" anything illegal, I suppose anyone that posts "lol I was late for work this morning and went 60 in a 45 to get there on time" should have their posts removed and get an official warning, because speeding is illegal and therefore may not be discussed!

The AUP does not cover things like this at all...

It does for photography, which is what the submission in question was

Quote
Photographic work must be suitable for all ages, and submissions MAY NOT be rated higher than General. Photography involving mature or adult situations or illicit activity are not allowed. This includes images containing [stuff] or alluding to illegal activity.

Though this is still fairly vague as noted.

As for the part about posts/discussions, I think the intention is just to say, "If you get arrested for talking about illegal shit on FA, don't blame us".

The best part is that's still not the rule they're throwing around while they take stuff down. And again, "illegal activity".

Wearing a mask over your face in public is illegal in some places, better yank down all the fursuit photos.

So again, what happened with Pinkuh is gonna happen with Sciggles. The lulz crowd and most of FA's userbase hate her, and no matter what she does, it will be colored by the fact that she's got the site owner by the balls. She will never be "right", regardless of the circumstance. Everything she does will be undermined by this.

She's basically the worst possible person to be an admin, even if she was the best Internet moderator in the history of the world.

Except now they'll just use that excuse for her terrible behavior/policies/etc.

"No she really -is- a good admin guys, you're just not giving her a chance!"

It won't matter. The lulzers will hound her until she quits, or at least makes herself a hell of a lot less visible. She'll get tired of every tiny move she makes as an admin on the site being the subject of a thread here, on lulz, or on FAF.

The writing's on the wall. It's just a question of how long she can endure this treatment.

I think it's interesting that every time there's one of these "admin deleting things" scandal, it's generally one admin (or a very small handful at the most) deleting one thing, which will of course be taken by third parties and turned into "[Admin] is out to get [y]!!!!!" They've finally lost it! FA is doomed!". In reality it's just showing that there's a lot of lazy admins.

Of course the easiest way to fix this is to not provide the end users with the name of the administrator who deleted their uploads. Something the new sites should look into. I know I have.

This and possibly, y'know, applying the same set of rules to all users equally.  Also narrowing down any grey areas created by purposefully vague rules.  Also...

Uh, isn't it the case already that, if the admin who deletes an upload doesn't send a note, they don't know who deleted it? Every screenshot I've ever seen is from a PM from the admin explaining why the submission was deleted.
