EZwolf, the "Director of Photography, producer, and editor" of the hit film "Bitter Lake" recently took to FurAffinity to call out the Furry News Network for, get this, not removing comments from their reupload of the Bitter Lake trailer. They then go on to say that if Furry News Network doesn't start moderating the comments and removing "trolls", they will abuse the DMCA to get YouTube to remove the video.

Quote
Dear Furry News Network staff,

A few days after we published the trailer of Bitter lake on YouTube, you put a copy of it on your own FNN account.
While we appreciate you promoting our project in this way, it would have been kind of you if you asked our concent or even better: made a link to the original source of the trailer on YouTube which you had at that time.

We understand that this trailer creates a tremendous amount of views to your account, which we can live with, if however you take your responsibility and MONITOR what is actually happening on your account. In case you haven't noticed; there is currently a lot of flaming, trolling, bitching and throwing around death threats going on there.
If you decide to use -or piggyback on- other people's artwork or intellectual property and publish it on YouTube, then at least have the decency to monitor the comments made there and delete what is not a valid and on-topic reaction or constructive criticism.

When we found out this was happening, we felt the need to inform you about this issue and did so several days ago in a direct mail to FNN. To our surprise however nothing has changed since then, leaving us with the sole option to ask you again. Only this time in an open letter!

Act responsible if you upload material to YouTube which is not your own.
In the case of the Bitter Lake trailer we strongly urge you to do ONE of the following things:

1. Remove this video from your account
2. Start monitoring the comments. Remove anything that is not a valid and on-topic reaction or constructive criticism and keep monitoring it as long as the video is available.
3. Remove anything that is not a valid and on-topic reaction or constructive criticism and disable the 'Reply' option.

Just to be clear: We have no problem with criticism on our film project. On the contrary, it helps us to make better projects in the future. We do however have a problem with people (no matter who) who are spreading hate and throw around death threats to the people who worked on this project. Those being people we love and care for. Oh, and we have a problem with news networks not responding to serious issues, but that aside.

All we ask is that you to respond to this letter and act fast on what we have made you aware of yet again. If one of the requested acts is not executed before the 9th of September however, we will inform YouTube that FNN uploaded allegedly infringing content.

We trust however that FNN is cooperative in this matter and respects the intellectual property of people no matter where.

EZwolf & Shay
(Producers of Bitter Lake)

None of the YouTube comments I've seen are particularly nasty, just your general "troll" stuff that 4channers throw around whenever they see something "furry".

Seriously, though: What?

I guess the only thing this has going for it is that we are spared from looking into these peoples' faces as they are "acting". Fucking furries.

So...I take it they're not fond of the First Amendment, then.

Fuck those assholes.

It's amazing how disconnected from reality the people in the journal comments are.

DMCA them and have done with it; that's what it is for.

As sensitive as this fandom is to people stealing each others' content, I'm surprised they did this.

Yes, DMCA is designed for content creators to use it to keep trolls from trolling in YouTube comments. And Movie Trailers are NEVER distributed by people other than the movie studios, because that is CONTENT THEFT!!!!

Wait I thought Triggur was supposed to be halfway sane mature.

Also: I would think your legal standing might be diminished somewhat by the "we'll let you violate our copyright as long as you only say nice stuff."

This is what RapidShare/MediaFire is for, upload it there and be done with it. As sensitive as this fandom is to criticism, I'm surprised they didn't do this.

EZwolf may have figured out that he wasn't getting any sympathy even from other furries discretion is the better part of valor; the journal got nuked.

Somebody mock up a movie poster for this thing with a bunch of fake 'awards' logos on it.  Maybe they'll threaten our host!  (who will promptly laugh in their faces)

So...I take it they're not fond of the First Amendment, then.

Doesn't apply in the Netherlands, though they have similar laws (as does Europe as a whole; there's more explicit exceptions, but that's because it's based on civil law).

I think Markos sorted the issue out with Bitter Lake crew. He may have other things to worry about; FNN's intermittently loading as an XML document here. Bad plugin?

I don't really approve of reposting other people's content in full. "Fair use and commentary" generally does not mean copying the whole thing; they could still have embedded the movie. (There's also the issue of keeping comments local, which helps you build up a community around your site.)

I'd be a little surprised if it didn't win the relevant Ursa Major Award next year. Probably not an Academy Award, though.

The 'relevant' award being 'category nobody else submitted anything to'.

I think that the FNN people probably assumed that, since it was a trailer, it could be treated like all other trailers on YouTube. How often do you see sites repost trailers for games or movies? All the time. I don't think any movie studio in their right mind would prevent promotional content from being redistributed outside of their "official" channel. Even the unofficially posted trailer for "The Room" (with all it's terrible comments) is allowed to stay up with over a million and a half views.

While I think most legitimate operations don't really care about reuploading when it comes to trailers, since it's "free publicity"...it's ALSO the case that most of them upload trailers to an "official" YouTube account and probably prefer that you embed it from there, if for no other reason than to feed their analytics.

Of course, one imagines these characters probably disabled embedding to try to thwart...exactly what ended up happening, so yeah. If in 2011 you don't understand the defined arc of events in a situation like this, then you deserve everything that comes your way.

What the fuck is it even? A "furry movie", sure, but what is it about?
