Ohio furs Brown Leopard (Ronald R. Packer II, 33), his wife, Wolfie Stonespirit (Jennifer Packer, 30) and Keba (Joseph O. Luna, 21) were arrested July 14 after exiting a barn around 3AM. The trio were charged with breaking and entering and receiving stolen property.

Marion County police recovered a large amount of stolen property from their home and estimate they have committed over sixty thefts in the area. Brown Leopard is also wanted in West Virginia for failure to appear on a weapons offense...

Brown Leopard is listed as head of Security and Webmaster for Morphicon, and Keba assisted with their performance events. Con chairman Jewelsays they no longer serve the organization [tip: Tom Howling].

In Ohio, breaking and entering is a fifth degree felony, punishable by community service, probation or 6-12 months prison and a fine of up to $2500. Receiving stolen property ranges from fifth to third degree; a fourth degree felony is up to 18 months and $5000.

IIRC the central OH furry community is mostly a closed clique of right-wing shut-ins, granola types, beardos, and...isn't Jewel like one of those people who goes stone-cold psychobitch if you don't get their preferred gender pronouns just right? Or maybe that's their significant other, I honestly don't care remember.

I'd imagine that Columbus could do better for a city of its size but if experience is any guide most of the furries probably stay home and/or online after getting a whiff of that crowd. All the visible people are easily in the late 30s to 40s age bracket (or beyond), and the demographics of central Ohio don't really reflect that.

Ooh, is it time for Crazy Ohio Furry Talk? Goody. The Ohio furry scene is terrible (although probably not in any way that really sets it apart from the fandom in general), but probably the worst of a bad lot is Ostrich (aka Xolo), the admin of the totally official Ohio furry mailing list. It's pretty bland nowadays because Ostrich scared away most of the interesting people with his totalitarian enforcement of Allowing Civilized Agreement of Any Topic (as long as people agree with him). It's also one of those weird furry groups that pretends to be family-friendly, so you can talk about "yiffing" 'til you're blue in the face, but god forbid you should let loose a "fuck" or a "shit": usually Ostrich will boot you without any warning, then lecture the rest of the list about decorum. Oh, but that's not the only way he relishes his big-fish position in the small Ohio pond: when another group started a web site for furries in Ohio, he shouted them down as if his group was the One True Ohio Furry Group. Whatever. Thank God the Internet's mostly migrating off mailing lists and onto disparate web forums and weblogs.

I met Ostrich once, back around 2000 or 2001.  He seemed ok at the time, but within the next year, the Vanity Fair article came out.  In retrospect, I felt much more creeped out knowing that I'd met him at a general SF con, Millennicon, where he was in charge of the Children's entertainment track and taking care of people's kids. He was already at the top of the Ohio furry social scene, which was really getting into fursuiting at the time, especially him and some other guy, Panda I think - it's been a while.

While we're on the subject of Morphicon staff, Trickster has written furry porn involving hermaphrodite robot bunnies raping people.
