Iconoclypse:

Avatar Policy & Guidelines

Avatars must be work safe. They may not contain blood/gore/fluids, rapidly flashing colors/images (i.e. "seizure mode"), outlines/indentations of genitalia or nipples, or be sexually suggestive in nature. General rule of thumb: avatars must adhere to the same guidelines as “general submissions”.

Further, avatars using the work of another artist without their permission will be removed.

Accepted formats: .gif, jpg, png (.jpg and .png will be converted to .gif format, with possible loss of quality)
Max avatar filesize: 50 KB
Max avatar dimensions: 100x100 pixels

Avatar F. A. Q.
Q: What does "work safe" mean?
A: Work safe means it must be something that is appropriate for viewing while in the standard work place.

Q: Are bouncing boob icons and jiggling butts still allowed?
A: No, they are now prohibited as avatars due to their sexually suggestive nature.

Q: Are fetish avatars allowed?
A: Explicit sexual fetishes are prohibited as avatars.

Admins were apparently deleting icons last night to enforce the new policy, giving users little to no warning. There has been no rationale offered as yet, but one can imagine the usual reasons for a move like this.

Particularly interesting (and characteristically vague) is the notion that icons depicting "explicit" sexual fetishes are disallowed.

Weren't sexually suggestive icons banned long ago? I remember something like that happening, and I recall wondering few days ago what happened to that rule since I ran into a lot of such icons lately.

Those bouncy boob butt icons are an eyesore and I say farewell to them on no uncertain terms.

Because subjective AUP policies and journal-scrapers are totally high-priority.

That said, I remember when they added the "seizure mode" icon restriction. It was unenforceable then, too.

Suggestive avatars were allowed so long as the animations remained tasteful and subtle. These disgusting bouncing boob avatars just pushed it over the edge because they were against the AUP in the first place, and I guess they just decided to ban all sexual avatars, subtle animations or not.
The thing I would like to know is why this is not a site-wide announcement? The only place on FA it is seen is on Fender's little front-page shouts. I would think changing the AUP a bit would warrant at least a small announcement? Ah, well.

FA cannot communicate with it's users. They typically use the worst ways to announce things (Forum announcements and frontpage news items). A whopping 300 people have read the forum announcement, and the Fender news items are likely ignored by most people as they are filled with stupid shit and advertisements for FA: United 95% of the time.

Looking through FA today several days after the ban it seems if they're mostly clothed it's OK.  This of course means every single one of them will look even more identical, because all they'll do is recolor the bra.

The thing you need to remember most about the Administration of FA: It's creed is "Do not cause a stir/be confrontational if you can help it."

If you look at a lot of their actions with the mindset that the LAST thing they want to do is be confrontational/cause a stir (because that leads to the ever dreaded DRAMA) then a lot of it will make a lot more sense.

Yeah, it's not hard to do a small announcement. I mean, even if it were up for 2 days it would get the message out, but instead FA seems to want an influx of TT's submitted and people complaining about how they didn't know/how it's unfair, etc, and a lot of people are going to get in admin trouble because they didn't happen to stroll over to Fender's front-page shouts or the FA forums. Hell, I found out about the new rule through someone commenting on a submission saying something about "new avatar rules" so I went to the AUP and didn't see anything.. then the guy linked me to the "Knowledgebase" where it's shown :\ It's ridiculous.

FA is a big site with many users, Dragoneer needs to learn that there will always be confrontation and sometimes you just gotta do shit and deal with the backlash of "dat's not fayuurr :("

Speaking of this sort of thing, I noted that someone on FA recently received, without warning, a temporary ban for uploading a photo-manipulation with nipples in it. The journal they made on returning is a good example of how this sort of thing alienates the community that uses the site:

Thanks for the warning before you hatched your ridiculously overbearing judgement on me, FA mods! -.-

All the times i proudly defended this site and those who administrate it when people claimed it was run unprofessionally were misplaced... and now i know this, so i won't bother in the future.

Telling me my submission was against the rules and removing it would have sufficed just fine, thanks! There are certainly much worse things on this site than 6-pixel wide nipples anyway. Go bother them.
...
Anyway, yup, back! Now i can access notes and things and resume normalcy. Though now i have to go to work... uploading new art will wait until tomorrow.

There's probably now a few less people who will go "But It's free!" in future.

Well if it was a real photo of a real woman with real nipples, then yeah that's actually against the site rules... but suspending someone without warning like that? Not the usual way they do things..

a) trim your fucking quotes, mongoloid
b) their unenforceable rules are totally subjective, how can you expect consistency when they are relying on "our admins know it when we see it"?

Especially when conversations in the admin chat commonly consist of "Need a second opinion!"

It didn't work in the obscenity cases of the sixties, why do a bunch of furry fetish porn (!) site admins think they can make that rationale work?

AKA, someone to blame if someone else gets butthurt by what I do. Personal responsibility in an authority position? Dragoneer says, not on my FA!
