Dragoneer interviewed by Brazillian furry site
« on: February 25, 2011, 01:34:53 pm »
Be warned, the interview was done "in-character" and is a bit murrypurry.

Some great replies include (emphasis added):

It's difficult to not repent from a site such as Fur Affinity. I think it's like being a father. Sometimes you love your child, sometimes hated, sometimes want to throw them in the window. But I still love them deeply. Hardware failures or general drama makes me bite your lips, I feel frustrated. Sometimes I lie in the data center until 2 am or later trying to fix problems. But this kind of thing happens with any site.
This is quite misleading, as the last few times he's mentioned being at the datacenter late had to do with moving the hardware to their gigantic new rack.

We have worked with a great team of people in FurAffiity from Yak and Net-cat (code support) to Damaratus and the rest of management team. We're actually working to soon add new directors, expanding our skills, improve the support team and increase the diversity of languages (Yak Warmock speaks Russian and German). We are currently working to rebuild the structure of administrative work to improve support to the forum. It is something the site needs.
Again, we see him praise Yak and net-cat for being part of a "great team" who releases exploitable code and can't figure out half of FA's problems. We also see him again believe that FA's problems lie in "support".

Quote from: Dragoneer
The main problem was the code on the site. Has been constantly updated over the years but needs to be rewritten from scratch. We're working on it, but still has some problems of the past. Once we can overcome the problems of code, the site will be fluid and efficient. We hope to have good news as soon as possible.

Hwei Chow - Still within the subject "Technical problems", a hacker recently discovered a security hole in a new feature to hide comments, ie, it was a serious problem that has placed the site in read mode for a long time. How did you deal with this attack? Unable to identify its author to throw it in the arena of users who have anger?

Dragoneer - I'll be honest: It was not meant for that to happen. The error that was used against the site should have been fixed, and resolved. We know the hacker involved, and he had good intentions, but I believe ... out of control. We are working to rewrite the whole part of the site that had a problem, fix bugs and avoid those problems (and similar) happen again.  But this shows that we must be more vigilant with testing, and also do open betas.

We pay about $ 1,600 per month now, but it gives a lot of headaches. We are working to cut costs, but keeping the site fast. Donations cover about 60% of the costs with advertising helping others 40%. Works well, I guess, and advertising is 100% created by members of the FA promoting their services.

We will try a new advertising system that makes other promotions, but we will release it only to people not logged. Just for those curious about the site. Nothing that will affect normal users. It might work or not. We will try and see if this water is good. We want the site to be 100% free, and any advertising will be only one service, not restricted or limited as the DeviantArt.

Pretty sure he's been looking to try this new "system" for years. Also, if you want to cut costs and save money the first thing you could do is, again, move to a 1/3 rack and sell off unused hardware.

Dragoneer - are working on many things at Fur Affinity. Pro early 2011, we will be opening a web hosting server and work to unite this with the FA. Our new interface is coming, even if a little late. Folders will include galleries, and a new website Commissions system with many advantages. Adding more hardware pro AF.
Welp, it looks like the new UI is officially delayed. "Cutting costs" appears to mean adding more hardware as well.

Everything else involves FA:U mostly. But there's this:
Quote
Dragoneer - Some people. Fender is the Director, while I deal with business in general and talks with Cray Wolf (who takes care of the Dealers Den). Fenris is responsible for planning events, Witchiebunny care records, Jack (Baka Saka) takes care of the games room (where we are VERY proud!), Shy Matsi handles the hospitality room and everyone helps with everything else in banking, as Skippy, Kitt3ns, Zero, Biji and the rest of the group.
He takes a chance to say "I'm proud of all the hard work the FA:U staff does to make sure the convention is fun for everyone!" and just uses it to name the staff and make sure everyone knows that their GAME ROOM IS AWESOME!!1!!one!1 Stay classy, Dragoneer.

You might do better with the original English version, rather than a translation of a translation.

Thank you, Green Reaper. I was wondering what the hell "Witchiebunny care records" was.

So FA costs nearly $20 000 a year.  It brings up a question: Do you think Dragoneer is bothering to save for retirement?

Of course he is! He's doing so by investing in FA! I mean, at the rate the site is growing, he should be able to sell it for millions by the time he's 70!

...Right?! Right?!?!?

Supremely doubtful, given everything else he shunts money into. Gotta have the latest new gadget, gotta have the latest games, gotta go to every single mother fucking convention on earth.

I'd say that investing in FA as a company WOULD be a prudent long term investment strategy, but that would require Dragoneer to 1. have an investment strategy to begin with and 2. to be willing to put in the time, effort and money to hire competent coders, and to run the site competently and efficiently.

As those aren't happening, FA is just a money pit. But that's alright, I'm SURE Dragoneer can sell it for more than $50,000.

I don't know; I suspect he abuses credit cards in a way that would make even the worst status-conscious yuppies blush. I mean "having the money" that you spend is a sound financial principle. When was the last time Dragoneer did anything that was characterized as "sound" or "smart"?
Can it be this sad design
Could be the very same
A wooly man without a face
And a beast without a name
