Predictions for the fandom, 2011
« on: January 20, 2011, 06:39:29 pm »
Because I desperately need a topic shift, and to keep this place from looking like a wild jungle of anti-FA sentiment, let's play a game.

In this thread we take some recent furry event (that is not FA related, of course) and extrapolate some kind of prediction of the future from it.

Yes, I realize this is fairly open, and my fellow moderators may give me funny looks for being this goofy, but why the fuck not, right?

I predict that there will be an effort at the other major convention (I can never keep AC and FC apart) to try to beat the elevator-stuffing record. As unfunny as loss of life is, they might try to do it on the ground floor.

Your turn.

Damn you.  You took my idea.   >:(

Unfortunately, "random furry goes on a TV show and does/says something that gets the rest of the fandom up in arms because they think aforementioned random furry is making the fandom look worse than it already does in the public eye" is about as good a prediction as I can make.

A furry murdering another furry perhaps.

I think in recent years there was a polish furry who murdered someone (who wasn't a furry) and there was that plot in the UK by two fellows to murder one of their parents & Starblade unhappily departing the mortal coil by a juggalo's knife, but there's been no furry-on-furry murder yet AFAIK. I suspect that unless someone involved was fairly well involved/known in the subculture, it wouldn't get much attention. Perhaps its already happened and wasn't widely noticed.

Edit:

It would not be a pleasant or good thing to say the least, but I suspect it will inevitably happen at some point. Especially with the increase in numbers of people participating in the furry subculture and the rise and rise of social networking.

I remember doing this back in the very early CYD days and it was kind of retarded. But now that we have something of a handle on where shit is going, maybe it won't be so bad this time.

Basically, there's shit that I know is going to drop, shit that will probably never drop, and shit we'll never see coming.

I really don't see anything good on the horizon. I wouldn't expect more dogfuckers (unless some major digging is done), but I would expect more sexual assaults. We might find out about them, or we might never find about them. But they're going to happen. Why? Furry still has it's collective head too far up it's own collective ass to establish rules regarding basic boundaries that other fetish subcultures have had in place for 40 years. People still call it a "fandom" for chrissakes.

Kind of a grim prediction, but Chase getting through college and getting top grades in his criminology major or whatever, becoming a detective

and then being taken in for a bout of "Excessive brutality", making of that what you will.

Aside from that, perhaps a closet-furry politician that gets outed. I'm sure they exist.

Someone will publicly call Conway on his bullshit at Anthrocon and be thrown out.

oh and some random furry will die in a funny way, and while it's terrible they died, it'll be like starblade and we won't miss them.

You need grades for that? I thought all you needed was misdirected anger and an authoritarian personality.

The FA security situation will come to a head, and they'll be unable to control it; either making it unfeasible to operate the site or accelerating a decline into irrelevance similar to LiveJournal. Dragoneer will have lost a lot of goodwill from the fandom due to this plus the rape-victim note leaked last month.

Speaking of detectives, starting in March the comic strip Dick Tracy is getting a new writer, Shanda the Panda creator Mike Curtis. Watch for a storyline where a dogfucker is tried and found innocent.

FA will get hacked again.
Oh come on, that's like predicting the sun will keep shining! Try harder: HOW and WHEN do you think it'll get hacked? Will it be by another disgruntled ex-contributor like Verix, or some independent 'security' group like Goatse Security, or what?

Hmmm, lessee... The next FA: United, someone will hijack Dragoneers wifi session and take control of FA, deadmin everyone, and beat the site like a pinata. Dragoneer, unable to do anything remotely, will drive hellbent to the datacenter, still wearing his fursuit. Driven on a red-eyed caffeeine-fueled mania, he will tear all the network cabling out with his bare hands. Someone will call the cops saying there's a maniac running around the building trashing the place wearing a purple dinosaur costume.

Then there will be a message on the front page stating "FA is down for maintainence, and will be back shortly".

This so-called UI upgrade form the paid developer will not make the deadline in May.
