Commissions and Artists
« on: January 09, 2011, 08:40:23 am »
I was wondering if some of you could help with offering some info to try and get a different sort of perspective on furry. Not so as much about people, but more about mechanics of interaction. I thought that it would be helpful to have furry compared to anime/manga for some point of reference, and maybe some of you who seem to know something of anime fandom could throw their two-cents in. I don't know anything about the anime/ manga scene in the least, so I come to you guys to pick your brains...

People drawing commissions and those who want them done seem to be really big in furry, and I wondered if it exists to the same extent in anime/ manga fandom. There's certainly no shortage of artists in anime circles, but furry seems to differ to an extent in that they have less of a commercial media base to draw from, and much of the concepts/ideas seem to be more "home-grown". Furry seems to have a strong emphasis of people self-identifying with characters and maybe this is an artifact of having less of a mainstream input directing the flow of ideas. Anime on the other hand has a huge popular commercial base of product. Is there less of an emphasis on personalized characters ("fursonas", origional characters, etc") because of this? Is there less commissioning of artists in anime on a personal basis also, instead maybe there being a tendency to having more self-published comics/small press instead?

I'd like to see the topic stay on more of a clinical discussion on the mechanics of furry fandom and how some interactions differ in anime, rather than getting into personal tastes and whether or not one likes one or the other. And any discussion that's related in concept would be welcome as well. I'm going to take a shot at asking the same thing in the FA forums to see what kind of input occurs over there. I'm not writing a book or anything, but it would be interesting to find out some of this stuff. Thanks.

I disagree. Some of the best artists I've seen aren't furries as such. Granted, most of them at least keep up some appearance of having a fursona or whatever to please the customers, but not all of them do.
Can it be this sad design
Could be the very same
A wooly man without a face
And a beast without a name
