I'm going to go out on a limb here and strongly imply that:
1 - Most furries are unlikely to ever see $1500 at one time in their lives
I am way late to the thread, but I am going to throw my two cents in anyway.
First off I am a furry. I have been involved with furry fandom for almost 20 years.
Most furries do not have fursuits, most do not attend conventions, most do not wish they were like animals. Most simply like the style of art, the look of the characters, the concept of anthropomorphic characters like Bugs Bunny, books like Watership down, and Narnia. Most furries would also not be particularly worried about this my strange addiction episode either, no more so then then a trekkie would be worried about when Saturday night live picks on star trek fans.
If I were to compare furries to any other fan based group I would say it is most like a cross between comic book collectors and trekies. Just like those groups you have all types of folks, from the extreme to the casual. Just like those groups you have the young and poor, like this young lady, and you have folks that have high middle class incomes , like myself, and those that have more money then they know what to do with. I can tell you that quite a few fall into the middle there, for a logical reason. Just like comic collecting, or any other type of thing that involves collecting or conventions, there is a decent amount of cost involved.
In short, the overwhelming majority furry fandom is just a simple fan based thing for folks like for anthropomorphic characters, nothing more.
