FA implements another useless feature
« on: November 03, 2010, 12:44:04 pm »
Dragoneer's journal states that if you suck up to him by giving him cash dollars, he'll stick a badge on your profile.

Still no word on the security vulnerabilities or the 12-year-olds or the dogfucking admins or the commission page. But now you can get a profile badge!

Perhaps eventually those who do not donate, or have been deemed to be a threat to Dragoneer's hegemony, will have some sort of badge of their own. Maybe a star of some sort.

I like how the ribbon for admins even has a crown on it, just to emphasise that these are very special people indeed.

To be honest those badges are pretty ugly, though I suppose they match FA's 90's design. Who wants to bet they'll be ported over to the new style where they'll look even worse and more out of place.

I also noticed http://donations.furaffinity.net/. What kind of person would donate $300 a month to that site?

Edit: also, this "feature" was to be implemented in "mid to late September" according to the above page. Lol they can't even start posting images to profile pages on time.

There are plenty of furfags who are exactly like Dragoneer: in their late 20s/early 30s, no kids, and no real responsibilities to speak of. They work in jobs like network administration, which due to the massive growth of the broadband Internet in the last 5-10 years, don't require a lot of education or competence (usually you get those certs from vendors and you're ok, I know people with only a high school diploma who do this kind of stuff). Because they lack kids, or maybe even a house/car payment, and possibly have another furfag boyfriend who is making equally as much money, they have a LOT of disposable income compared to "normal" people. Outside of the maddening lack of perspective these sorts of people often have, they also seem to lack good judgment in who to give their money to and how to spend it.

Personally, I take comfort in the fact that these people will basically be, in ten to twenty years, what the automotive assembly line workers were decades ago: got where they are by the good fortunes of their industry, mostly, and don't know nothin' else. When the data center/Internet/whatever industry they're in finally mature and demand for their skill set starts to shrink (and conversely, the supply starts to grow because everyone thinks they will have a job for life if they're "in computers"), they'll be the first ones fired. Lots of shit flies when the company's making gobs of money, that will become a firing offense when things aren't so easy.

And thanks to their complete lack of maturity, they don't have any kind of savings or safety net to fall back on. They blew through it as soon as it hit their checking account, on stuff like iPhone sandwiches. This is my fantasy anyway, because I don't want to believe life is that unfair.

Rather reminds me of the PRECIOUS PIXELS that Furcadia sells for absurd amounts of money.  Roses and dragon wings and shit.  Hilarious.

Next oh-so-important feature to be implemented: Korean MMO-style customizable avatars (only $9.99 for the special 'magic wand with a paw on top' accessory!)

In the comments, Dragoneer explains (using pretty poor grammar) how to get one of these badges without donating:

Offering suggestions that decide are good and implement, helping fix an exploit, generally being supporting and helpful to other members of the site and getting notice (e.g. you like helping out users, offering good advice, tips, etc. and making their FA stay a welcome one...)

No wonder they were finally implemented. He needs to give Henri Watson official recognition for being a super great guy who helps FA fix security holes.

EDIT: best comment on these yet:
Admin Ribbon really needs the sickle. The hammer is already there.

I know it's meant in jest, but don't you think representing adminitrators by a banhammer might perpetuate the negative view towards admins?

Hey, he could go further and represent administrators based on specialties. Chase can have an erect dog cock, and Witchie can have a badge containing just the word "FUCK"!

Of course, Dragoneer has a different perspective:

No, not really. No way that police carrying guns perpetuates a symbol of them in a negative light, or judges with a gavel. It's sort of the "nature" of things.
Uh..huh. The nature of being an administrator is primarily handing out bans. And having crowns. Right.

I seriously think the Toonces reference is lost on most furries. Most FA users are probably too young to remember the original airings AND the few years that Comedy Central showed those seasons in syndication. Shit, I was in high school during the Comedy Central re-runs.

This. Fucking. Post.

I keep forgetting: Who was that dude who blew something like $10-20K on a Goldenwolf commission (and what was that commission?) back during the dot-com boom? Because he forever set the bar for conspicuous furry consumption.

Was it the dude who wrote Associated Student Bodies? Lance Rund, if memory serves.

Lance Rund was the one who shelled out for that piece?!  Ack!  That's news to me.  Then that makes it the second time he's shelled out major bucks for Goldenwolf art.  A couple of years earlier, he paid something like $2000 or $3000 for a piece called "Wings of Love".  I don't think either of them were commissioned though - they were for sale at a furry convention art show.

Little known trivia: Lance Rund's early-90s bondage boyfriend Cinnamon is partially responsible for establishing the "wolves vs. foxes" meme in the fandom.

Oh my god these other Dragoneer quotes are hilarious:
In reply to someone saying they were in the "Anti Drama-Llama movement":
[quotehttp://www.furaffinity.net/journal/1836349/#cid:15329228]The ADLM caused a few more issues than it did resolve them, unfortunately. Good intentions on their part, but...[/quote]
Kinda funny given his activity with WYS.

In response to someone questioning why they should trust FA with web hosting:
Second, the web hosting is not going to be directly handled by FA, but by somebody who does it professionally for a living for a Fortune 500 company.

Wait, Dragoneer works in IT but can't run web hosting himself? Is he finally admitting he has no fucking clue what he's doing? I mean, it's not exactly hard. I know a 16-year-old who does it.

The sad part is that I do all sorts of hosting professionally for a multitude of Fortune 500 companies (and also for a lot more smaller ones...), and this sounds a little hinky to me.
im glad the "I saw a furry IRL" thread is so good at bringing goons together
