I also noticed http://donations.furaffinity.net/. What kind of person would donate $300 a month to that site?
There are plenty of furfags who are exactly like Dragoneer: in their late 20s/early 30s, no kids, and no real responsibilities to speak of. They work in jobs like network administration, which due to the massive growth of the broadband Internet in the last 5-10 years, don't require a lot of education or competence (usually you get those certs from vendors and you're ok, I know people with only a high school diploma who do this kind of stuff). Because they lack kids, or maybe even a house/car payment, and possibly have another furfag boyfriend who is making equally as much money, they have a LOT of disposable income compared to "normal" people. Outside of the maddening lack of perspective these sorts of people often have, they also seem to lack good judgment in who to give their money to and how to spend it.
Personally, I take comfort in the fact that these people will basically be, in ten to twenty years, what the automotive assembly line workers were decades ago: got where they are by the good fortunes of their industry, mostly, and don't know nothin' else. When the data center/Internet/whatever industry they're in finally mature and demand for their skill set starts to shrink (and conversely, the supply starts to grow because everyone thinks they will have a job for life if they're "in computers"), they'll be the first ones fired. Lots of shit flies when the company's making gobs of money, that will become a firing offense when things aren't so easy.
And thanks to their complete lack of maturity, they don't have any kind of savings or safety net to fall back on. They blew through it as soon as it hit their checking account, on stuff like
iPhone sandwiches. This is my fantasy anyway, because I don't want to believe life is
that unfair.
