FA's down.  What's new?  I wrote a blurb that can (hopefully) be found at http://community.livejournal.com/furaffinity/211143.html?thread=2860487#t2860487

FURAFFINITY: THE LATEST VICTIM OF THE ECONOMIC DOWNTURN.

MISTER OBAMA WHERE IS YOUR STIMULUS FOR FURRY STIMULATION?

Every other porn site of significant size on the Internet can turn a profit.  Yet more evidence of DOING IT WRONG.

Now if only this complete failure can cascade through the con circuit...

Pretty much this.

It's been suggested by at least Crypto and yak that some sort of revenue-generating features be stuck in place and that they get a real payment gateway and so on and so forth, but doing that is a little bit like walking through quicksand.

wherein i spew geeky shit about how badly the colo facility dropped the ball

FurAffinity's colocation facility is Quik-Host.com. They are currently down. In fact, their sysadmins appear to be less competent than FA's: Both of their DNS servers are on the same network.

All in all, the colo seems like an unprofessional outfit.

Level3, Ironpath Networks, HE, PCCW
99.99% uptime is 3156 seconds of downtime. There goes that record, if it even existed.

Ironpath Networks looks to be a sketchy outfit and possibly no different than quik-host: they use quik-host.com as their DNS, and it's got the same idiotic misconfiguration, and so they're down too. It's really disingenuous for them to advertise 4 backbones when one of the four is owned by the same person.

Currently the FA IP space is being routed through Hurricane Electric, along with Ironpath's and QuikHost's. Recovery onto a different backbone ought to just be a matter of re-announcing your BGP prefix. That this hasn't already been done is rather ample circumstantial evidence that they either don't have the peers, or that the failure runs much deeper: the BGP prefix appears not to be announced at all (or, they're not using BGP. either way, they're not exhibiting any redundancy)

Quik-Host's site is full of very trivial misspellings, the most amusing of which is "Pentuim". Again, totally unprofessional.

At the bottom of seemingly every quikhost page:

OH NO I DIGITALLY REPRODUCED PARTS OF THEIR PAGE, I HAVE NOW COMMITTED IP THEFT

This is SO fucking furry. No wonder they're using this colo.

I've changed the title of the thread to something more uh, universal.

And on that note: Yes! let's pour more fucking money into a site that was a massive clusterfuck of blatant favoritism and poor management held together with banana stickers and twist ties!

For those wondering where all these fabulous mountains of cash are coming from, keep in mind that that 2K MONIES has come from the same place it always comes from - affluent gays working high-paying programming and IT gigs. Lots of furries in there, and they aren't going anywhere. Since they don't have families, they really can spare the money.

I have a hunch that until someone manages to offer that particular demographic something better, FA will pretty much always be around no matter how spectacularly it implodes.
