Geek comic honors geek fandom
« on: September 03, 2008, 02:08:14 pm »
http://xkcd.com/471/

So the comic which requires a BA in computer science to often 'get', and still doesn't seem written for an actual laugh dons ears and tails for a brief mention of furry in a not-too-horrid life.

Countdown until the combined kudos and vile words from the unwashed masses commences. Remember each time CSI is mentioned, you have to take a shot.

Furry is a sexual fetish and NOTHING ELSE!

Patronizing and ignorant. You know what? I'm tired of geeks who pride themselves on being in just the right place on some socially acceptable weirdness continuum. I'm tired of people who treat knowledge and empathy like it's some kind of points system, where they can thoughtlessly regurgitate an ancient and thoroughly-debunked stereotype as long as they do it "just this once".

While I'm at it, here's another thought: Isn't it ironic? Whenever you do something unique or unusual, people doubt your ability to take care of yourself. They talk about putting you in a "group home" or "assisted living center", or more respectfully, a "madhouse". And yet, if you do everything the normal way, have no distinguishing characteristics, and basically let society decide what you do, what you think, and what you enjoy, then you're fine on your own.

This goes right back to my suspicion that Randall Munroe, as well as a lot of self-proclaimed "male feminists" would be more inclined to treat women as equals if they behaved more like men.

People like this need to look hard at themselves and the people they've cast as their enemies. They need to look at their tactics and their prejudices and realize that they're both on the same side.

And yes, I know I've been guilty of all these things. I've been at the giving as well as the receiving end of all this crap. Like an asshole once said, "I'm not being any harder on you than I am on myself."
