FA Obsession Collection / Re: Project Phoenix
« on: January 19, 2014, 04:57:39 pm »
Holy shit how long has it been since I posted here?

It’s one thing to feel cautious about rape accusations, especially given how a single false accusation can fuck up someone’s life for years. I understand that mentality, even if I don’t fully condone it.

That said: ’Neer not only fucked up his initial response to the accusations (I know: what DOESN’T he fuck up), but he continues to fuck up by sounding more and more like an insensitive jerkass with each continued response to the accusations during all this new drama.

Of course, ’Neer doesn’t have too many options for a reaction here. If he fires Wan from FA staff (at the bare minimum), he risks becoming a pariah to Wan’s fanboi brigade. If he addresses this situation even more publicly than he has to date, he'll likely bring even more drama upon FA as he tries to respond to further allegations of misconduct (of which we've already seen him do a piss poor job). If he stays quiet in the face of criticism, he’ll look like an even bigger asshole regardless of whose side any given person takes.

Basically, ’Neer kinda fucked himself over hard by not addressing this situation back when he received the first accusations, and now things have come back to bite him (and FA) on the ass. I don’t envy the position he finds himself in right now.

It wouldn't surprise me if it fucked up in an even more bizarre manner, like the existing FA code only working because it inadvertently makes use of a bug/'feature' in mySQL which Percona has fixed.

Given all the other problems with FA's code, this wouldn't surprise me in any way.

At least a prolonged shutdown might get users migrating to other sites.

More information about the situation which caused this to occur:

Sciggles deleted images of Sonic porn belonging to FA user IS (Instant Sonic) -- http://www.furaffinity.net/user/is -- under the reasoning of "this art displayed cub porn" (despite rules saying you can draw porn of underage Sonic characters if you age them up, which IS allegedly did). IS, in a fit of rage, wiped their entire gallery and submitted an image of a dildo (which got them banned). This led to Sciggles' submission about "guidelines" for drawing Sonic porn.

So, yeah...FA is now dictating artistic style "policy" to its artists.

Congrats, Sciggles - you're gonna carry that weight.

News Media / Re: Bad Dragon Seriously PR'd
« on: February 04, 2012, 09:39:54 am »
I've seen bad PR bullshit before -- Ocean Marketing's self-destructive debacle is the most recent example -- and this is right up there with the worst. No worthwhile company tries to silence its critics (especially if said critics are customers) in an attempt to erase a potentially caustic situation. Bad Dragon could have asked "Lady~" to return the botched order, then sent out a replacement order free of charge. Good customer service often means taking a loss to the bottom line.

Judging by this debacle, though, I'd bet Bad Dragon's "general manager" is more concerned about profits than customers.

Dick.

"Lipstick on a pig" and what not. Sure, the code might be stuck in 1999, but at least it won't look that way!

I'm honestly wondering if this new UI will be using tables for layout.

FA has a fuckton of technical issues as it is; why is 'Neer trying to finalize a facelift to a shitty system instead of making the system not shitty first?

What gift did FA give itself to celebrate it's seventh birthday?

It made Sciggles an administrator.

Gee, wonder how that happened.

Any single one of these things on their own might not be that huge a deal, even to FA.

Taken together, however...it's amazing how utterly incompetent the FA administration is, when it's laid out in full. FurryLeaks and the Furocity merger situation debacle were especially awful.

What amazes me, more than anything else, is how no other site has risen up to challenge FA's "alpha" status (oh, the irony in that terminology) in regards to furry artdump sites. InkBunny could be a good contender, as it has some features that are particularly nice in comparison to FA, but the nauseating site design and the "this site supports cub porn" reputation all but nixed its chances of challenging FA.

At this rate, it would likely take a complete "non-furry"/outsider coming in and giving furries a better-coded, better-administrated artdump site to dethrone FA -- and even then, the community would probably shun the site at the start because it was made by a "non-furry".

Happy seventh birthday, FA! Here's to seven more...minutes of decent uptime.

FA Obsession Collection / Another day, another crash
« on: December 19, 2011, 01:41:20 am »
It appears that the database has crashed and is currently in the process of recovery.
This is not something that should be happening, so an investigation as to why it took place is underway. No ETA yet

Yak, once again, shows us that nobody at FA has a goddamned clue what's going on with FA. The site's been slow-to-unreachable in the early morning hours for the past week or so, and you'd think they'd have looked into things because of that.

Somebody needs to check out a book on Blender from their local library.

Or, better yet, throw out their computer and find something else to do with their life.

Well, the latter, I'm not so sure about.

Last night I sent refunds out to everyone still waiting on a slot for my Iron Artist. Regretfully, it's just not working out. I had good intentions when I started, but the more and more I sat down to work on them, the more I was pulled away. I spread myself too thin, and I tried to take on too much at once. I couldn't focus on any one thing, and I fell behind. The more I fell behind the more guilt and more frustration I felt, and it only made things worse.

It ended up with me depressed, frustrated and stressed. The site and the pressures that come with it didn't help. Add in a relationship that needs attention and love, a car accident and more, and it just ended up getting all wibbly wobbly.

I'm not quitting drawing, but I will no longer take money for it. I'm not an artist who should be taking commissions. Ever. I'll be following up with people waiting on commissions from me next week (when I get my paycheck) to square things away with them.

I sent refunds out to the original accounts who paid me. All of them went out last night. If your Paypal has changed since this started please note me, and I'll make sure you're squared away.

It's not easy typing this, but I need to come to terms with the facts. I do too much, and the more I do, the less I can focus on any one thing. I'm sure more than a few people probably are due an "I told you so" and "I was right" and I'm going to concede that, yep, you were. But I'd rather refund everybody. It's the right thing to do.

So, this weekend, I decided that I needed to focus on something. And I chose to make my only focus FA. I'll still draw, but I want the site to be my priority. We've got over 550,000 registered users, and we gain hundreds of users a day. The site needs a person willing to focus all their attention on it, and that person has not been me. That has to change.

Some of you have noticed some changes on the site recently, all for the better. That's what I'm focusing on. I want the site to be better, work better. I can't do that if I'm not focused on the site.

Again, my apologies to those who waited on me. I failed in that aspect. But I realize now, more than ever, I need to focus my attention on the site.

something about mature vs. adult art (?).

FA plans on making it possible to filter mature and adult art separately. (Mature is basically "nudity without sex", while adult is "OH DEAR FUCKING GOD".)

Good lord, I've seen Flash animations from the early 2000s that looked better than that.

What does Kage get out of using his position for this sort of thing? He seems to have a habit of doing this, it's gotten him into trouble in a couple of instances IIRC.

He gets to look like a "nice guy" by "helping" another furry. The more gullible members of the fandom will donate towards getting this guy something wholly unnecessary for his immediate survival just because Kage is a "nice guy who helps furries".

God knows this guy couldn't just, y'know, save up the money to buy the program himself -- nope, furries gotta fur and help raise the cash for it because "OMG if I don't help this other furry I don't even really know then I'll be considered a bad furry!!!11!1".

I can understand donating towards somebody's immediate survival -- like, say, helping somebody get some food/temporary housing after a natural disaster -- but buying someone a pricey computer program for no reason other than they're in the same internet community as you is fucking ridiculous.

Andy Runton has got to be one of the coolest and at the same time most genteel guests Anthrocon has ever hand. Millions of people out there enjoy "Owly," a bird who says very little yet speaks such volumes to all of us.

Andy (and Owly) could use a little help. They're using a very outdated version of Adobe Creative Suite and would so love to upgrade to something a bit more 21st-Century. Andy is too modest to ask for donations, but me, well, I have no shame. If you like Owly and you would like to help drag his artist kicking and screaming into the modern age, you can make a Paypal donation to andyrunton(at)mac.com.

I've made mine, modest though it is, because every little bit helps. I firmly believe that such a unique and cherished creation as Owly fully deserves our support, if only to keep his creator from going mad with the incessant "this version is no longer supported" boxes.

"Owly" is also very well merchandised and has appeared at several conventions (including Comic-Con), but even with the "millions of fans", the artist needs the help of the furry fandom to buy a $700 software package. And the man who's asking for the donations will fly himself and his parents first class to a furry convention in another country.

You know what's really sad about this?

It's actually going to work.

"You don't know how FA works!"

At this point, I'm surprised that Dragoneer and Yak know how FA works. From everything I've ever read about the backend side of things, FA basically needs to be rewritten from the ground up and put on hardware built for the purpose of hosting an artdump website by someone who knows what the fuck they're actually doing.
