Despite it's hype and advertising before it opened, it seems that the open beta for Weasyl went off with less of a bang and more of a "*cough*". Coupled with a lack of new features being added (though we are told quite a bit is being done "under the hood"), and what seems to be a lack of direction in general (Advertising has all but disappeared), one must ask

IS WEASYL DOOMED?

What is Weasyl's niche? InkBunny is for cub porn, SoFurry is for writers who hate how FA formats stories... with Weasyl, I'm drawing a complete blank. (And I have an account.)

I remember the admins saying it's not a furry-only site (Edit: the last thread confirms this), and I even remember someone in the forums bitching about how the site was all furries. So... maybe they see themselves as the next DeviantArt? Good luck with that.

Weasyl's niche is "being better run than FA". That's about it, at the moment. Again, they're lacking direction or goals.

Inkbunny is playing the long game here. Once all those cubs grow up . . . bam. (But seriously, the site is remarkably easier to manage without the 13-17 crowd.)

Back on topic. Weasyl is doing a lot of things right. They have some traffic, though only about 30-50% that of Inkbunny or SoFurry (FA has ~7-8 times the reach of both).

Will it topple FA? Nah. But all it has to do is build its own community, keep them happy, and maintain feature parity with other sites. If and when FA does go down, it'll be a contender. They'll need to be ready for a rush of traffic, though, and the delays I've seen at peak times suggest they're not quite there yet.
