Vaginal bruising is normal during intercourse
I'm sure it's a normal occurrence for a dog to get a bruised vagina and vaginal tearing during mating. Nope.

I take it there wasn't any evidence of the accusations of the dogs being killed from sexual abuse?
Yes there is.

1) At what point is "old age" a good reason for euthanizing a dog?
The male was put down out of pity because his sister was being put down due to pyometra. He had also suffered from prostate and penis issues.

The proof required for the police to prosecute was questioned which was why I mentioned the former comment. As for being skeptical I'm just trying to sort out fa journal from what's reported in the news, considering the number of drama queens on there you can hardly blame me for that.

In the case of tearing I am sure they will be able to prosecute, but you didn't mention that originally.

Pyometra is a common infection in unspayed dogs which is unrelated to sexual activity

From what I've read, spaying is an alternative to euthanasia that usually cures it.

I'm just going off of what I've heard. I've heard vaginal bruising and tearing.

From what I've read, spaying is an alternative to euthanasia that usually cures it.
I think open pyometra [pus is actually coming out of the vagina] can be cured with medicine, but closed pyometra [pus isn't coming out] is very dangerous and vets will recommend taking the uterus out.

Pyometra is a common infection in unspayed dogs which is unrelated to sexual activity
Of course, but pyometra is an infection caused by hormonal changes in the body. Zoophiles wait until their bitch is in heat before they plow it ["because she's willing"] and this can cause infections, pyometra and false pregnancies due to the hormonal changes.

Shelby bestiality case prompts legislative action
Jun 17, 2011

SHELBY -- News of a bestiality case was enough to prompt state Rep. Jay Goyal to take immediate action.

"A couple days ago I got a phone call from Jack Donaldson from the (Richland County) Humane Society about this incident, and we've already got some legislation in the works," Goyal said Thursday.

On May 18, Peter Bower, 31, of Shelby, was charged with two counts of animal cruelty after authorities discovered an extensive history of sexual activity with his 3-year-old shepherd mix.

Thirty states have laws prohibiting bestiality, distinct from other forms of animal cruelty. Ohio is not one of them.

"Right now, we're in the process of doing some research and drafting the legislation. We're taking a look at what other states have done and then going from there," Goyal said. "This is the first time I've ever encountered anything of this nature. But this legislation needs to be done to prevent horrendous crimes like this from taking place."

State Sen. Kris Jordan said he, too, had never encountered such a case.

"I can't ever recall any legislation coming up where we've dealt with it," he said. "It's pretty obscure and repulsive, and I think people just never imagined something like this taking place."

According to a search warrant, on May 19, authorities confiscated numerous items from the Shelby man's apartment, including books on bestiality, a plastic blow-up sheep, photos of the man with animals, sex toys, several cameras, film and computers.

Richland County Dog Warden Dave Jordan also took the man's dog. A veterinarian said the shepherd mix had vaginal bruising.

A search of the man's Internet activity displayed an extensive list of photos and stories from his sexual encounters with three dogs and a horse. He also acknowledged interest in other animals, including ewes and sows.

"I'll try anything once!" he claimed.

The man's personal stories expressed his deep love for animals -- which didn't surprise a neighbor at his complex.

Rosario DeLeon, 41, said after the man adopted the shepherd mix from the Richland County Dog Shelter on May 7, he posted a "Just Married" sign in the back window of his vehicle.

The back bumper of the vehicle is still lined with "I love my German Shepherd" stickers.

"Whenever I'd be outside with my dog, he'd always come out with treats for her, and he always asked if he could walk her -- but she was ready to bite his hand off," DeLeon said. "She wanted nothing to do with him. I told him no, and then he offered to train her. He said he could post her progress on the Internet and said people would post comments and suggestions about how to train her, and I thought that was so weird. I told him I couldn't afford that, and he said he'd do it all for free."

She said once she tried to sell him a male shih tzu she had been sitting for, whose owner never returned for him.

"He told me he was only interested in female dogs," DeLeon said.

DeLeon said neighbors watched as authorities removed item after item May 19. When they discovered why, DeLeon said she was glad she trusted her instinct.

"He is a sick man and ought to be locked up. I can't believe there is no law that prohibits bestiality," she said. "He walks around here now like it's no big deal."

Jordan said the man had advertised dog walking and sitting services around Shelby and at the Mansfield dog shelter.

"I had a lady who called me today in tears because she had used his dog walking services before and said her dog had been acting funny afterward, and now she doesn't know what to do," Jordan said Thursday after the News Journal broke the story.

Online, the suspect mentions another man who helped photograph his sexual encounters, Jordan said, but so far, authorities are only investigating the one man.

The man's attorney, Gordon Eyster, did not return messages from the News Journal.

The accomplice who took the photos was far smarter than Bowers. We only have a handle - "loonewoolf" - and were never able to find anything substantial on him, even though his involvement in the case is quite extensive. He could very well wind up slipping through the cracks here.

A lot of the reports mention Bowers managing to gain access to at least one horse. If he really did so, it would be news to us. He posted numerous solicitations on Beastforum for an "experience" with a horse, but we have no idea if he was successful.

Pre-trial hearing is on Monday. They are now charging him with molesting his previous dogs as well:

More charges ahead in Shelby bestiality case

SHELBY -- More charges are on the way for a Shelby man charged in connection with sexual abuse of multiple animals.

On May 18, Peter Bower, 31, was charged with two counts of animal cruelty after authorities discovered a history of sexual activity with his 3-year-old shepherd mix, Aurora.

Thirty states have laws prohibiting bestiality, distinct from other forms of animal cruelty. Ohio is not one of them, but, since then, lawmakers have started pressing to put such legislation in place.

On Wednesday, Richland County Dog Warden Dave Jordan filed two more counts of animal cruelty against Bower, accusing him of having sexual relations with a German shepherd, Maggie.

After reviewing items confiscated by search warrant from Bowers' apartment, Jordan discovered what he called "diary letters" to the 11-year-old pet. One of the last was drafted April 4, 2010, and detailed a physical encounter with the animal.

According to euthanasia documents, Maggie and Bowers' male German shepherd were put down five days later. Maggie reportedly suffered pyrometra, which is an infection of the uterus.

Jordan said the infection could have been caused by the use of lubricants.

Jordan said evidence indicates a friend of Bowers' may have sexually abused the male dog, but there is no mention of the friend's name.

Shelby police are still investigating Bowers' computer activity. Bowers' attorney Gordon Eyster has not returned messages seeking comment.

Bower's pre-trial hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday in Shelby Municipal Court.

No jail time for animal abuse

News Journal

SHELBY -- A man accused of having sexual relations with animals received no jail time in Shelby Municipal Court on Wednesday morning.

"I believe you have a very severe problem," Judge Jon Schaefer said to Peter Bower, 31. "My first impulse is jail time, but jail will not help you."

In addition to 80 days of community service and two years probation, Bower must undergo a sexual evaluation, take sex addiction classes and pay a $500 fine.

Bower was ordered to not own any animals.

In May, the Shelby man was charged with animal cruelty after authorities discovered a history of sexual activity with his 3-year-old shepherd mix, Aurora.

Investigation revealed Aurora was not the only animal Bower had abused. He posted photos and stories of his encounters on multiple bestiality websites.

Bower's attorney Gordon Eyster met with Shelby Law Director Lee Shepherd, Richland County Humane Society agent Missy Houghton and Richland County Dog Warden Dave Jordan behind closed doors at the court Wednesday for about two-and-a-half hours.

At about 11:30 a.m., Bower walked into the courthouse lobby. Five minutes later, court resumed in public session.

Wearing hunter green cargo pants, a white button down shirt and green jacket, Bower took the stand with Eyster to his left and Shepherd standing nearby.

Eyster entered a no contest plea of for his client in reference to a charge of injuring animals.

Schaefer found him guilty of the charge, a first-degree misdemeanor.

Thirty states have laws prohibiting bestiality, distinct from other forms of animal cruelty. Ohio is not one of them, but since this incident, lawmakers have started working on such legislation.

Houghton said a proposal is almost ready to be introduced to the state House of Representatives.

Bower, who seemed dazed, kept his head down, swallowing hard as the judge read his fate.

His one-word responses to questions were always delayed, and sometimes had to be prompted by his attorney.

Houghton and Jordan said they were satisfied with the outcome.

"He's not going to get any treatment if he's in jail," Houghton said. "Considering that there is no law in the books, I thought this outcome was very fair."

"I'm really happy that he's not allowed to own any more animals, and hopefully now we'll be able to find a home for Aurora. We had to hold her here for months for evidence," Jordan said, noting that the dog is doing OK. "She's been in a kennel for months. Now she's been walked every day, but there's a certain amount of stress that goes along with that."

Jordan said he's glad awareness was brought to the issue.

"I think the classes will be beneficial to him," he said. "At least he'll have a good shot at getting better, because I do think this is an illness. I hope this helps him get his mind right and lets him know his behavior is not normal, isn't moral and is just plain wrong."

Bower and his attorney declined comment after the hearing.

It doesn't sound like much at first, but this case has already gone way, way further than most others like it. The animal shelter and it's staff, the dog warden, and the Sheriff's department went the extra mile here. They deserve the utmost praise.

And the payoff is still unfolding; the movement to criminalize bestiality in Ohio is still going strong.

Great success. If it makes even a few other dog monglers think twice about what they're doing, then all the better.

One step forward; two steps back. This is Ohio government.
Can it be this sad design
Could be the very same
A wooly man without a face
And a beast without a name
