We know that Dragoneer is spineless and easily dominated; if you couple it with a credible threat to FA, and consider how much that site means to his ego and (probably) his financial health, it's not that much of a leap of faith that there might have been coercion involved with the amount of control Yak has over the site.

It's not like it's real hard to find flaws in that site. Yak may have found a real doozy of some kind.

There are also rumors that the reason why Yak refuses any kind of assistance is because if Neer actually hires someone else, that someone might realize what is Yak doing behind the curtains with FA, perhaps find some of the on-purpose-back-holes made by him.
Anyone thinking that the passwords leak that occured couple of months ago was something Yak could've stopped, but he chose not to?

Not to mention, Yak is confrontational, rude and snaps at the slightest sign of someone pointing out mistakes in what he does. Definitely not a behavior fit for administrator of a big site like FA.

I don't think he would even need to code backholes anywhere; if Dragoneer tries to get rid of him, he can just be like "DROP FURAFFINITY CASCADE" and everything would be gone. :D

Yak is obviously a  shitty programmer, an incompetent administrator, and lives half a world away from NoVA with few obvious connections to Dragoneer. Yet Neer trusts him like he's never trusted anyone with FA and is unwilling to change that or really show Yak who is in charge at the clear expense of FA.

Normally I'd say it's just another day in the world of Sean Piche but I do agree things; especially motives, do not add up here. If there is something skeevy going on, I wonder how much Dragoneer knows?

Pretty much this. Nobody, not even some FA admins, know where Yak came from or why he's given so much responsibility. A journal by Dragoneer from two years ago about Yak says "yak has been the backbone of Fur Affinity for as long as I can remember." The earliest cached copy of the FA staff page from August 2006 shows him as one of the three coders. He only registered for FA at the end of January that year. He's been working with FA's code for almost as long as it's been around, yet he's just now starting to "fix" it, which begs the question "why didn't he do this earlier"?

I don't think he would even need to code backholes anywhere; if Dragoneer tries to get rid of him, he can just be like "DROP FURAFFINITY CASCADE" and everything would be gone. :D
He probably has backdoors "just in case".

I have to say, if Sean Piche really did tie up so much of his money and life in something he basically bullied out of Alkora's control, then proceeded to hand the keys to some shady character from Eastern Europe who now holds it in a deathgrip...then all assessments of Sean Piche's intelligence up to now make him look like a fucking Rhodes Scholar compared to this little bit.

My god. He deserves what's happening.

FA is down; as was promised in the "brb, installing yet more expensive shiny toys" admin notice. One thing that caught my eye was "dedicated firewall". Is this a response to the DDoS? Is it an *effective* response to DDoS? Or is it spending thousands more than necessary because they don't know how to do '/etc/init.d/portmap stop'?

Moreirritating is the load balancer. If it's the F5 BIG-IP 8800 that Dax was talking about, that thing is a big power hog and way overpowered for their network. That and they don't have an infrastructre to load-balance to.

I'll throw another nmap at it once they're up and stable (so, on Tuesday).

I was thinking about this too; what do they have to load balance if they only have 1 instance of a front-end and 1 instance of a back-end DB? I guess they could have set up some duplication where there's now actually multiple instances running but I doubt that's anywhere near in their technical capability. I look forward to seeing what the nmap looks like (and the resulting diagram) - they always surprise me with what they try to do.
