There's supposive word that all these weapons were enherited from his grandfather after he died earlier this year.  I'm curious as to how true that is.  Though still it doesn't explain why he didn't take immediate action when the will was read and the stuff divied up.  I doubt your probation officer would bust you if you called and said 'My Grandfather died and left me all these guns but I can't have guns.  What do I do???'  Heck, documented evidence of him making that call probably would have gotten him a nice 'not guilty' if someone dragged him back to jail for that.

Especially considering usually the 'get rid of them' involves selling them, not confiscation. I mean, how can you expect not to be busted when your gramps leaves you half a dozen firearms?

Do we even know for certain that this is actually the case?  I mean is there any real evidence thus far that shows he "inherited" a bunch of guns and got busted for them, as opposed to, oh, I don't know, being an idiot furfag and willfully obtaining one?

As far as I've seen, the source of that rumor was that posting on lulz.net, quoted here.

That "rumor" was published in the linked news article, covering the arrest.  That is Ferguson's official word to the police, that the weapons were inherited, and his family has restated this to everyone who's asked.  I'm sure that'll be tested if this goes to court.

He didn't simply go out and buy a gun.  Around a dozen were confiscated, which sounds much more like an inheritance.  I'm willing to buy this part of the story, it sounds very plausible.  Though why the weapons weren't simply given to his parents or another relative, is really beyond me.  Sounds like the family is pretty bargain basement stupid.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking this.

The inheritance is more likely. In order to get 5 without getting flagged for NICS, they'd all have to be face to face purchases, which I'm not even certain is legal in itself in California. Although purposefully avoiding the system for 5 purchases would explain why they're coming down so hard on him too.

Either way, he's a moron, one route makes him a bit of a sinister moron, the other a moron in a family of morons.

Not to mention, as it seems he lived with his grandparents, it's doubtful that he had the cashflow to amass himself such a range of firearms.  I realize that just a handgun can be a few hundred dollars, but with the number of weapons we're looking at thousands of dollars.  I just sorta doubt he had the money for that or he wouldn't be 23 and living in his Grandfather's house.
