Zetacreations came first. I think it dates back to 2003 if not earlier.

I wouldn't feel bad for TORA at all. He's done this before and is likely still doing it, and I don't buy his story about being an innocent bystander in the 2001 incident. (Neither did the court, obviously...)

As for what happened to him, I think he was sentenced to three years, served for two, and was on parole for another three. Presumably that parole carried with it internet usage restrictions. He's in the CA offender database at any rate.

So wait, you weren't 16 at the time of that private message exchange? Or were you fibbing about something else? It doesn't matter because either way, you shouldn't blame yourself for anything.

Scandal! / so apparently dave hopkins has a 400+ page hate tumblr

i am quite late to the party

Everyone is by now familiar with Hopkins, his awful writing, and his lack of drawing skills. The vast majority of the minor squabbles he's gotten tangled in over the past decade have been utterly forgettable. He's creepy, his comic is creepy, people love him anyway. Par for the course, right? There's no point in raining on that particular parade unless something really bad is happening, is there?

Well, starting in late 2010 someone started a tumblr archive containing the worst of Hopkins's artistic excesses (i.e. all of them and then some), along with all of the re-edits that have been posted to the various chanboards.

Everything goes as normal until March of this year. That is when they find (or decide to reveal) the most explosive dirt. Turns out that Hopkins has had a downright abusive and dangerous relationship with his wife, and it's been toxic since long before they were even married. She called Loveline for some manner of advice back in 2001, and seemingly only now have they managed to dig up the actual audio of the call and make a transcript. As you can guess, the long-term results of the call were not exactly constructive.

I'm not sure why this info is suddenly public (or rather, why all the dots have suddenly been connected) after ten years*. For all we know, two and two were likely put together pretty much the second the show was aired, with all the commentary on the subject memory-holed completely - only to be rediscovered a decade later. It doesn't really matter.

Whoever is behind this blog believes that they have managed to redirect their atrocity tourism operation into a noble but naive attempt at intervention that is almost certainly doomed to failure. I guess I can identify with that. But I hope for their sake that they're sharp enough to realize that the furries will give no fuck in the end. The fact that they're shocked that there are otherwise ok-seeming people tolerating Hopkins's shit kind of shows how green they are when it comes to the field of furries behaving badly.

(*at this rate i look forward to 2028, when someone integrates a 300-datapoint cyberneurojournal about adam wan)

Honestly though, what's the point?

These "awards" are a tired, sad leftover of furry's "fandom" phase - when people genuinely tried to file anything with a talking animal in it as "furry". This was completely out of touch with how popular opinion continues to isolate works created by furries (that are usually intended for consumption by the furry subculture) from works created by mainstream artists, writers and producers (that are usually intended for consumption by the general public). Furry has little to do with mainstream cartooning/writing/what have you; it's it's own little thing.

You can say that furry draws it's inspiration from the mainstream, but you can't just appropriate things from the mainstream and call them furry. Granted, the line gets blurred sometimes, but that's a number of exceptions you can pretty much count on one hand.

hey

hey

shut the fuck up

sometimes people get so fucked up when it comes to tragedy that they start obsessing over the tiny, insignificant aspects of it because trying to deal with the actual loss is a task that is utterly impossible at such an early stage in the game

besides, like it or not, the smashed possessions in the car and the dead bird either were or represented things that both serpy and her husband felt were important even though to your internet-cool mind they were petty and/or nerdy

i mean, the fact that there aren't even that many mementos left, that the crash was so violent it even destroyed everything that was in the trunk of the fucking car - that just compounds everything, it's insult on top of injury

i don't want to hear word fucking one about how this is somehow furries being furries, this is someone undergoing a massive loss, they are in a state of tremendous shock, and they are going to say things that sound a bit odd because they are not capable of being 100% rational cool dudes right now

when it happens to you you might fucking understand, i'm sorry you were not appropriately moved by her performance

Continuing to point and laugh at this sort of thing does serve two valuable purposes (aside from being funny):

1: The more that places like us make this shit public and put it out there for everyone to see, the more likely it is that the userbase will realize just how lousy the entire site is, along with all the people who run it.

2: By more or less archiving all their many failures, we're like a one stop shop of Protips on how -not- to run a site like FA, and anyone who feels the need to create a competitor need only browse the many threads of the FA subforum to learn the wrong way to do it.

Everyone who ever wanted to know how fucked FA is pretty much already learned all they really need to know years ago. The vast majority of FA's userbase (to say nothing of the rest of the subculture) really doesn't give a shit how broken FA is so long as it lets them flog their commissions and gives them their daily porn. That's why everyone is still goddamn there. It's demoralizing, really. Especially if you're working hard on a new furry art/community site, because it makes you wonder why you should even be bothering. It's probably part of why so many efforts to take the top spot from FA have failed or stalled.

Everyone who is trying to create an alternative art/community site pretty much knows what not to do by now. Do they really need to look so hard at just FA when the internet is littered with community sites (for subcultures and interests of all types by the way) that make the same damn mistakes FA does and worse, day in and day out?

The events of 12/16 are probably the only major incident related to FA that is going to be remembered in ten years. Nobody is going to care about much else. It didn't happen just because the site administration decided security by obscurity was good enough to cover their asses. It happened because some self-important dumbfucks took Piche's teenage bullshit so seriously that they had no problem causing real-life pain and suffering in the name of trying to stick it to him. It revealed problems with the subculture that are actually important, problems that are much deeper, older and more universal than some spoiled child's inability to run a website.

That is why I wrote about it - because it represented a level of ugliness that is "new" to furry but familiar everywhere else. The only role FA's incompetence and Piche's spiteful laziness played in it was to serve as a launching pad.

I'm pretty much convinced at this point that the FA administration does not actually want anyone's help, and they don't actually give a fuck what anyone else thinks. If they don't want any help, I don't see the point in offering it to them. Talking with them is a waste of time. Blathering about whatever big glitch/outage they're experiencing at the moment is also a waste of time. They've elevated handwaving to a martial art; they'll give a solution lip-service, but once they think nobody is looking they will simply go back to doing whatever it was they were doing before.

The site is beyond help. There's no fixing it; it can only be replaced. The amount of work it would take to truly "fix" FA would be tantamount to starting over again from scratch. The trouble with doing that is is that once you've started the site over again from scratch, why let the current batch of incompetent bozos run it? It's why FA ultimately shitcanned Eevee and his Ferrox project, and it's why the Ferocity merger was a short-lived farce.

So really, I'd just concentrate on supporting the development of the next big furry art/community site, whatever it is. I wouldn't give fuck one about FA itself.

Well, it's finally up. An article about the biggest furry scandal in years, and it took way the fuck too long to write about. I'm not even sure it SHOULD be written about, but here it is nonetheless.

I'm sure there are a number of fuckups in there, if you find any be sure to point them out.

Also see: the original thread.

Who cares? This is all wanking and vaporware.

The layout change is far beyond the FA staff's ability to implement. Mockups for layout changes and more have been floating around since 2009, and have remained just that: mockups.

I'm reminded a bit of the Ryugong Hotel. A decaying, half-finished hulk that is not getting any less ugly by the day. A giant slab of wishful thinking that stretches further and further beyond it's creator's ability to complete with each passing day.

58
Haha.  Look at you.  Look at yourselves.  Suggesting practical solutions to simple problems.  To FA.

FC guys gave the Hilton the special otter rape keys to give out to con attendees, but apparently did not bother to find out that the Hilton's key slots were an irregular size. So the keys were useless and the con ended up just giving them out as free swag.

I really, truly and seriously want to know whose brilliant fucking idea this was. Barring that, I really want to know how much money was wasted doing this - it can't have been cheap.

When people legit quit furry, they just stop. They trail off, and eventually stop posting. They don't make a big deal of it because it's no longer a big deal to them, and that's why they can quit.

The "classic" relapses with this happen because people will get insanely angry at the subculture only to realize that the majority of their friends are there - and they care about keeping their friends around much more than they care about whatever beef they have with the subculture.
